Josslyn, Jakoby and Damian Hager spent their Friday off from school helping their great-aunt Patti Larson. They picked apples at the Prairie Dawn Community Orchard, washed windows and cleaned out the garage at the GRIT house.

On Saturday, Oct. 21, Patti Larson met with Hendrickson Park caretaker Kim Brown. Then on Sunday, Patti met with Sheyenne Park Board members Dave Chenze Jr., Dianne Hanson and former member Dave Rieger to walk through the park and assess trees. Patti is working on a grant application from the N.D. Forest Service. If received, the grant would cover removing diseased or hazardous tress and replanting to diversify varieties. The Sheyenne history book, "Our Heritage," tells the story of Hendrickson Park. It started when Nels T. Hendrickson planted 1900 cottonwood cuttings and hoed them by hand in the summer of 1891. That would make some of the remaining cottonwood trees 132 years old. Trees in the park have more recently supplied firewood for the 4th of July pit BBQ.

Peter Larson readied the community garden for winter by mowing it. This wraps up another bountiful year of potatoes, onions, sweet corn, tomatoes, cabbage, cucumbers, green beans, broccoli and kale. There was some trouble early summer with deer eating cucumbers and cabbage, but electric fence solved the problem. Garden regulars probably noticed a new layout this summer. The implementation of narrower rows and mulching with alfalfa hay significantly reduced the labor required for weeding. It also greatly reduced the need for watering. Stay tuned this spring to see how the mulch overwinters and how the alfalfa incorporates.

Sunday, Jan Loe and Bonnie Deegan attended worship at Calvary Lutheran Church in Oberon. After worship, they traveled to Minnewaukan and enjoyed the American Legion breakfast. They were joined there by Carl Daugherty, Rhoda Stenberg and Keith Rost who had also attended worship at Calvary.

Patti Clifton did some errands in New Rockford Monday afternoon.
