Head to head: Cardinal wrestlers in action

A pre-meal appetizer before the turkeys and casserole came out of the oven meant some exciting action from the Cardinal mat crews two days prior to the Thanksgiving holiday.

Carrington started the head-to-head portion of the 2023-24 boys' wrestling campaign with a home dual in the East Gym Tuesday, Nov. 21, against the Oakes Tornadoes, falling in 42-30 fashion.

Highlights from the boys' match included wins by pin from Skye Kramlich at 107 pounds, along with Dru Carr (121), Nic Garber (145), Corbin Clifton (152), and an exciting come-from-behind fall from 285-pounder Brody Weisenburger over the Tornadoes' Max Cline to finish the proceedings. In losses, seventh grader Kallen Wolsky wrestled fearlessly in an 8-1 decision at 114, and Callen Garber dropped an 11-8 defeat at 215 in which the final result was in doubt towards the very end.

changes coming

Starting this year, there will be one significant change to the regional tournament format on the boys' side.

The Region 2 Dual Tournament will remain in Larimore and is scheduled for Feb. 3, 2024, but the individual tournaments have now been condensed into the East and West Region tournaments.

In the combined East, traditional and past Region 1 powers such as Lisbon, South Border, Oakes and Napoleon are now in the fold, and regional alignment changes will see Rugby and Northern Lights join both the East and Region 2 duals. HWC, a past member of Region 2, has now moved to the West and Region 4.

The East Region Boys' Tournament will be held at Carrington High School Feb. 10, 2024.
