Rockets fall short in Region 2 matchup

On Tuesday, Dec. 5, the New Rockford-Sheyenne girls' basketball team traveled to Cando to take on the Region 2 competitors – the North Star Bearcats.

The Rockets and Bearcats came out strong in the first quarter.

NR-S junior, Kaiya O'Connor, was found beyond the arc, going 2-for-2, to add six points to the scoreboard for the Rockets.

At the end of the first quarter, the Rockets led 12-10.

The Bearcats kicked off quarter two with a shot from the paint by Mattea Wanzek to tie the game up at 12-12.

After a drive to the basket by Wanzek and a shot from Payton Harpested, the Bearcats took a 4-point lead.

Another shot by Wanzek brought the Bearcats lead to six, but NR-S senior Kelsie Belquist ended that lead after driving to the basket.

A foul by Kaitlyn Erickstad sent O'Connor to the line to shoot 1-of-2 to bring the Rockets score to 15.

The Rockets were last to score in the first half with a shot by Lora Wobbema. The Bearcats led 20-17 at the half.

Harpestad swished two field goals, followed by a free throw for the Bearcats to kick off the second half.

It wasn't long before O'Connor swished her third 3-pointer of the night, bringing the Bearcats lead to five.

Just seconds later O'Connor stole the ball from the Bearcats and drove to the basket to score another two points for the Rockets.

After the third, the Bearcats led 31-28.

The defensive duo of Belquist and O'Connor brought the Rockets ahead of the Bearcats 32-31 before Wanzek answered with a drive to the basket.

The Bearcats were still fighting for a win. Wanzek put up a shot to score, and was sent to the line to make a free-throw.

The Bearcats took a 4-point lead, once again.

After a free-throw was made by Ava Peterson, the defensive duo of Belquist and O'Connor began to fire up with two more steals for the Rockets.

A minute to go and the Rockets had hopes of slowing down the Bearcats. But a shot by Wanzek gave the Bearcats a 5-point lead.

And with four more points scored – two from Elle Nicholas and two from Erickstad – the Bearcats took the 44-35 win over the Rockets.

Belquist led the Rockets in points with a total of 18, followed by O'Connor with 12.

As for the Bearcats, top scorers were Wanzek with 21 and Harpestad with nine.

The Rockets junior varsity team took a 22-57 loss from the Bearcats.
