Woodchucks out-score Rockets

NR-S fall to 2-5 overall with loss to St. John at home

On Tuesday, Dec. 12, the New Rockford-Sheyenne girls' basketball team hosted the Region 2 competitors, the St. John Lady Woodchucks.

The Rockets recently met up with the Woodchucks at the CNDC tournament in Rugby on Dec. 2, where the Rockets came up short 45-50.

The Woodchucks are heavy shooters from beyond the arc, so the Rockets needed to play their best defense.

The Lady Woodchucks were the first on the scoreboard, but it wasn't long until the Rockets were ahead 8-7.

This was until the Woodchucks began swishing three-point shots.

At the end of the first quarter, the Woodchucks led 14-12.

NR-S junior Kaiya O'Connor swished a 3-pointer to start off quarter two for the Rockets. And this kick started the Rockets momentum.

Swish. Nothing but net from Ava Peterson from beyond the arc. Not even seconds later, O'Connor dropped another 3-pointer in.

However, the Woodchucks weren't going to give up. Aubree Jeanotte was left wide open by the Rockets and was able to pop in a 3-pointer.

And another 3-pointer for the Woodchucks, yet again by Jeanotte.

The Rockets and Woodchucks were tied up 25-25 before Emmie Belquist took her chance at a drive to the basket to score her first points of the night.

Older sister, Kelsie Belquist, stole the ball in the next play to zoom down to the basket to score two more points for the Rockets.

The Woodchucks just couldn't keep a handle on the ball. Another steal from Kelsie Belquist gave the Rockets two more easy points.

But Jeanotte answered with a wide open 3-pointer.

At the half, the Rockets led 31-28.

Quarter three started with a long two by NR-S senior Katie Allmaras.

And back-to-back 3-pointers were made by the Woodchucks – one from Alani Morin and one from Jeanotte.

The Woodchucks' fire was burning brighter and brighter after taking a 38-35 lead over the Rockets.

Another 3-pointer by O'Connor tied the game up 38-38.

But the Woodchucks couldn't allow that so Kadence DeCoteau took her chance at a 3-pointer, which brought the Woodchucks ahead 41-38.

The Rockets began to fall apart in the fourth quarter, with most shots missing the basket, unlike the Woodchucks.

Peterson was able to finally make a 3-point shot to bring the score to 41-47.

With five minutes left on the clock, the Rockets had to start working even harder.

After a missed free-throw attempt by the Woodchucks, Kelsie Belquist took the opportunity to drive to the basket to score two.

But the Rockets were in foul trouble, sending the Woodchucks to the free-throw line multiple times.

Allmaras was able to sneak in a 2-point shot for the Rockets.

The Woodchucks still held a 7-point lead over the Rockets with 1:55 to go.

Who would win this Region 2 matchup?

Another point for the Woodchucks. 54-45.

And a point by Kelsie Belquist. The Rockets brought the Woodchucks lead back down to seven points.

But the Woodchucks scored another two points to lead 56-47.

Emmie Belquist was sent to the line to shoot two, but the Woodchucks walked away victorious with a 57-49 win.

Top scorers for the Rockets were Kelsie Belquist with 18, O'Connor with 13 and Peterson with 11.

As for the Woodchucks, Jeanotte and Morin tied for 16 points, followed by Kaycee Desjarlas with 10.

The Rockets junior varsity team also came up short 40-46. Top scorers for that game were Camebria Engels with 11 and Jaida Schumacher with 10.

The junior high girls defeated the Woodchucks 27-26.

The Rockets next game will be on December 28 at the Minot Auditorium with the junior varsity girls starting at 1:30 p.m.
