History of New Rockford: Jan. 8, 2024

On Aug. 7, 1906, Rev. E.T. Quam came down from Sheyenne to visit and do some business. That evening Dr. W.W. Bartley of Sheyenne drove down in his auto.

On Aug. 8, A.F. Schwenck was in from the Cathay area for harvest supplies. Miss Kittie Knox of eastern Eddy County, Mrs. W.G. Carter and her daughter, and Mrs. Thomas Adam were in shopping. Henry Garvin of Wells County, Sidney Hewes and C.A. Berge came in on business. J.W. Richter was down from Sheyenne on business and to visit. Lars Ostby was down from the Sheyenne Valley. Mrs. C.H. Culver came in from Kalispell, Mont., where she had been visiting and would visit in Eddy County for a while, along with Captain Culver, before they returned to Sioux Falls. Mrs. J.N. Binford of Chicago, a sister-in-law of H.M. Clark, and Mrs. F.N. Davies of Minneapolis, a niece of Mr. Clark, came to visit the Clark family southeast of town for a couple of weeks. Harry Campbell returned from Rochester, Minn., where he had undergone an operation for kidney trouble; he was “considerably improved.” Mr. and Mrs. T.E. Lahart returned from a visit to Minneapolis. Alfred Williams arrived from Antigo, Wisc., to visit his sister Mrs. Robert O’Neill and family. D.C. Rand, the auditor for the Powers Company, drove his auto up from Jamestown so he could check on the company’s interests. E.E. Alair made a business trip to Bowdon; he returned on Aug. 11. Miss Jeanette Adam returned to Tower City after a week of visiting her brother Thomas Adam and his family southeast of town. Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Hohl, who had been visiting from California, left for some eastern states and Ontario, after which they would return to California. That evening as J.A. McCrum of Tiffany was attempting to tie up “a fractious cow,” the animal attempted to get away, catching McCrum’s left thumb in the knot right above the last joint and crushing and cutting the thumb very badly. McCrum immediately drove to New Rockford for medical aid; the hope was expressed that the thumb could be saved.

On Aug. 8 and 9, A.H. Crawford was in Esmond, visiting his brother Dr. John Crawford.

On the morning of Aug. 9, a son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Turner of Morris. Mrs. Frances Wilson and daughter were in shopping. John Ducke came in for harvest supplies. Mr. and Mrs. John Wilson of Aledo, Ill., arrived to visit her mother, who lived on the Fisher farm east of New Rockford. Martin Endres came in from eastern Wells County and left with a load of lumber for a large machine shed for his farm. Granville Egbert went to Carrington to play baseball on the Carrington team against a league team of Grand Forks and Calumet players. Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Bennett took the northbound train; Mrs. Bennett got off at Sheyenne to visit friends, while Mr. Bennett continued on to Minnewaukan. That evening Mr. and Mrs. M.B. Fritz hosted a party with 12 guests at their Lamborn Avenue East home in honor of Mrs. Fritz’s sister, Miss Mae; “Nulle Grand” was played and refreshments were served.

The Aug. 10, 1906, “Transcript” said that the machinery men were setting up binders for the fall harvest faster “than tramps at a free lunch.”

With the approach of harvest and the appearance of many transient workers, that issue called on the businessmen to provide for a night watchman.

An announcement said that Rev. J.J. Graham of Sheyenne would preach every Sunday at 11 a.m. in the Rocky Mountain School and at 2:30 p.m. in the Sheldon School.

J.T. Shauers [Shauer] of Morris had a new granary; he held a dance in it on the evening of Aug. 10. Mrs. John Wenz had an impressive garden on Lamborn Avenue West.

The previous week, a daughter had been born to Mr. and Mrs. William Anderson of Morris.

J.C. Alair of Pasadena, Calif., and Miss Doras [Doris?], daughter of Assistant General Freight Agent Alair of St. Paul, visited the previous week with the family of E.E. Alair; J.C. Alair left for home on Aug. 2 and on Aug. 4 Miss Alair went to St. Paul, accompanied by Mrs. E.E. Alair as far as Detroit Lakes, where Mrs. Alair would visit.

On Aug. 10, the Morris School closed for the summer. The delegates to the Republican State Convention met at the courthouse and with James Hackney as president and W.G. Carter as secretary elected the following to the County Central Committee: E.S. Severtson, member-at-large; B.W. Hersey, New Rockford; F.S. Dunham, Munster; H.P. Halverson, Greenfield; A.H. Johnson, Sheyenne; Peter Hanson, Rocky Mountain; C.H. Ruland, Tiffany; William Morris, Pitt; F.H. Dutee, Colvin; Ole Hegna, Dutee; Martin O’Brien, Fay; George Fugina, Rosefield; Clarence Sheldon, Sheldon; Hans Pederson, Paradise; and James Hackney, Superior. Joseph Dutee was in from eastern Eddy County on business and for a visit. Mrs. W.T. Buck returned from Adel, Iowa, and the funeral of her father; her mother accompanied her and would remain for some time. Mrs. Peter Prader left to visit friends in Harvey and her mother in Voltaire. That evening, there was a dance in the Opera House.

From Aug. 10 to 13, Frank Foley of Jamestown visited his cousin Mrs. M.H. Fritz and her husband.

On Aug. 11, Gabriel Carlton came up from Barlow. John B. Edinger was in town on business; he had the contract for a new telephone line west of town. Miss Ethel Churchill went to Knox to visit relatives; she returned on Aug. 31. Mrs. H.J. Mitchell and her son Harland left to visit Pennsylvania and New York; Miss Minnie Syftestad accompanied them as far as Appleton, Minn., where she would visit relatives and friends; she came back to New Rockford on Sept. 1 and the Mitchells on Sept. 8. Mr. and Mrs. D.H. Fowler, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Leonard, Mr. and Mrs. George W. Johnston, Mrs. Axtle Johnson and her mother Mrs. Burton Hulbert, Misses Elsie and Vera Keime, B.W. Rantz, Charles Chamberlain, John Anderson, William Farley and P.M. Mattson were among the many people from New Rockford who went to the Twin Cities for the G.A.R. encampment. Also going to the encampment were Matt Mattson of Sheyenne, Captain C.H. Culver and Mrs. Culver, but Mrs. Culver went on the Great Northern, via Leeds. Mr. and Mrs. G.W. McDonnel took the southbound train; Mr. McDonnel went to Valley City and Mrs. McDonnel continued on to Minneapolis for the encampment. Mrs. Alfred Dinnetz went to Minneapolis to visit friends; she returned on Aug. 21. Christine Mattson of the Hotel Mattson went to Minneapolis for a visit; her sister Mrs. Andrew Johnson, Sr., accompanied her; they returned on Aug. 25. Dr. and Mrs. J.A. Carter and son went to Minneapolis to visit friends; the doctor would also do some surgery in one of the hospitals there; he returned on Aug. 27, while she and her son remained for a couple of weeks, returning on Sept. 15. William Rice, the proprietor of the Davies Livery Barn, went to visit his old home in Iowa; he returned on Aug. 25.
