NR-S dominate Patriots

On Saturday, Jan. 27, the New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets hosted the May-Port-C-G Patriots for their third game facing district competition.

Unlike their first two, this game would definitely go the way of the Rockets.

Not only are the Patriots currently sitting at the bottom of the standings, but two of their senior players were unavailable for the game.

So the Patriots were down on both size and experience, and the Rockets took full advantage.

The start of the first quarter remained close between them, but after about six minutes NR-S began to pull ahead.

They finished the first quarter with a 15-9 lead, which only grew from that point forward.

The NR-S offense was given free real-estate under the rim, as undersized Patriot defenders found themselves unable to consistently pressure the likes of Ashton Reimche and Bennett Meier.

Reimche and Meier both had excellent nights offensively, leading their team with 16 and 21 points, respectively.

Their dominance propelled the Rockets to a 33-18 lead going into halftime, and the Patriots' prospects didn't improve in the second half.

Also working well for the Rockets had been their full-court pressure, which the Patriots did not handle effectively, leading to a number of turnovers.

With dominance on both ends of the floor, the Rockets had a 55-27 lead after three quarters, making the final eight minutes nearly a formality.

The game ended with a score of 68-36, giving NR-S their first district win of the season.

A few days later, on Tuesday, Jan. 30, the Rockets went for their second district win at Glenfield against the Griggs-Midkota Titans, but ultimately came up short.

It was a close game throughout, and the Rockets even enjoyed a slim lead for much of the evening.

However, the Titans took a slim lead of their own midway through the third quarter and held on to it. It wasn't until the final few minutes of regulation when the Titans ultimately pulled away.

The final score was 61-48 in Griggs-Midkota's favor, which doesn't tell the story of what was a very close game in Glenfield.

Meanwhile, the Rockets also suffered a 50-78 loss at the hands of Washburn on Thursday, Jan. 25.

The losses to Washburn and the Titans, and the win against May-Port-C-G brought the Rockets' overall record to 6-7 – below .500 for the first time in weeks.

The Rockets' next game will be against the Benson County Wildcats on Tuesday, Feb. 6 in Leeds.

The Wildcats were 4-9 overall as of press time.
