Thunder takedown x2

Rockets head into District 4 Tournament as No. 3 seed

The New Rockford-Sheyenne girls' basketball team traveled to Northwood on Friday, Feb. 2 to compete in their final District 4 game of the regular season against the Hatton/Northwood Thunder.

With the Rockets and Thunder having a similar record, fans were set up to watch a great game.

Unfortunately for the Thunder, key player Kennison Azure was out due to injury.

The Thunder were the first to score, but it wasn't long before NR-S sophomore Ava Peterson put up a shot from the paint.

Hatton/Northwood had taken a healthy 7-point lead going into the second quarter.

Peterson was the first to score, once again, to start off quarter two for the Rockets. And the Rockets began their climb back up from their 5-point deficit.

NR-S freshman Emmie Belquist was found open twice, to bring the Rockets up 18-19.

The Rockets and Thunder kept rallying, until they were tied 26-26 at the end of the first half.

In the third quarter, the Rockets' momentum began to build. The Rockets took a 31-26 lead before the Thunder were able to score two baskets, bringing the Rockets' lead back to one.

At the end of the third, the Rockets held a 35-32 lead over the Thunder.

The Rockets went to town in quarter four, scoring 15 more points to the Thunders' nine, bringing home a 50-41 victory. With this win, the Rockets would take the No. 3 seed in the district.

Top scorers for the Rockets were Peterson with 21 and Belquist with 15. Scoring double digits for the Thunder were Elizabeth Pinke with 17 and Amara Howson with 13.

Up next on the schedule was the final regular game of the season.

The Rockets traveled to Pingree on Tuesday, Feb. 6 to take on the Medina-Pingree/Buchanan Thunder on their home court.

NR-S senior Kelsie Belquist was the first to score for the Rockets.

With full-court pressure, the Rockets turned over the ball continuously, giving the Rockets multiple opportunities to score.

The Rockets were on fire.

That was until Belquist went on a breakaway run to the basket, when she was fouled on by M-P/B senior Cale Redlin that sent her to the floor.

In a typical game, Belquist would hop back up and shake it off, but that wasn't the case this time.

With a possible injury to the knee, Belquist was assisted off the court by her father and head coach, Elliott Belquist, and would not return to the court the rest of the game.

Without their key player, the Rockets had to step it up a notch. And they did just that.

The Rockets put up 10 points in the second quarter, and only allowed the Thunder to score nine. At the half, the Rockets led 27-13.

M-P/B junior Maddie Gefroh was the first to score in the third quarter.

M-P/B's momentum began to climb, as the Rockets seemed to slow down.

Both the Rockets and Thunder scored 12 points in the third quarter, but the Rockets still held a 14-point lead going into the fourth.

And the Rockets were not giving up. Basket after basket, the Rockets came out on top, defeating the M-P/B Thunder 55-39.

Peterson led the Rockets with 19, followed by Lora Wobbema with nine. Top scorers for M-P/B were Kalen Kinzell with 15 and Allison Thomas with 10.
