Eight bound for state

The two gyms at Carrington Public Schools were rocking from all the excitement, as the Cardinals hosted both of the East Region individual wrestling tournaments Friday and Saturday, Feb. 9-10.

The one-class girls tournament was up first on the agenda, and the Cards emerged with a sixth-place finish (121 points) and seven state qualifiers. Topping the list was 130-pound champion and sophomore Khendra Garcia, who earned the number two overall seed for the state individuals in Fargo with a 39-5 overall record behind unbeaten freshman Julia Araujo of Bismarck High.

Ashley Lindberg made the finals at 250 pounds, but defaulted to Napoleon's Ava Moser due to medical forfeit. She will be the number three seed in Fargo at 33-6, behind top seed Phoenix Lindseth of Bismarck Legacy and Belinda Perry of Century.

The other two seeded wrestlers for CHS will be Jazmyn Ybarra at 124 (43-16), who will be the sixth seed, and Taya Lura, the #7 seed at 106 (34-14). Both girls took third place in their respective East Region brackets.

Also qualifying for state for the Cards were Karlee Lesmann (third at 170), Kendall Kovar (fifth at 136), and Kelsi Neuman (sixth at 124).

The Grand Forks Knightriders co-op of Central and Red River high schools won the tourney with 170 points, dethroning second-place Central Cass with 152. West Fargo United was third, and Class B opponents Lisbon and Napoleon finished just ahead of the Cards.

One day later, the boys' Class B event hit the mats. The Cards had one champion, junior Corbin Clifton at 145 pounds. With an overall mark of 44-9, he earned the highest state seeding for the team with a number two seed, on the opposite side of top-seeded Carson Hildre of Velva.

Second-place finishers in the East were Dru Carr (114, 41-12 record) and Callen Garber (215, 28-15). Both were assigned No. 4 seeds in their weight classes at state.

Skye Kramlich (44-15) and Nic Garber (24-14) took sixth at 107 and 139 pounds. The younger Garber will be seeded seventh, while Kramlich drew an eight seed.

The other state qualifiers for CHS were Gabe Clifton (fourth at 133), Brody Weisenburger (fourth at 285), and Max Ciubotareanu (seventh at 172). The three will be unseeded, but hope to spring a few upsets along the way.

A close boys' team race went to Lisbon over South Border, 247-237. The two, along with Northern Lights and Velva, should be among the favorites to take the state individual tournament crown. The Cards, with 149 points, came in fifth.
