A rash of firearm thefts has been occurring in New Rockford throughout January and February of this year.
According to Eddy County Sheriff Paul Lies, three vehicles in New Rockford have been burglarized, and he’s asking for anyone with information to come forward.
Lies said the three vehicles were left unlocked and had several firearms stolen from them, which the sheriff’s department has been working to track down.
The first theft reportedly took place on Jan. 13, and the most recent occurring in early February.
Lies said juveniles are believed to be involved in the thefts, who’ve been attempting to sell the stolen firearms online.
So far, the sheriff’s office has executed two search warrants and conducted two additional searches in New Rockford, in an attempt to locate the firearms. As of Monday, Feb. 26, Lies said only one of them had been recovered.
The stolen firearms include several rifles and shotguns, said Lies, who urged local residents to refrain from purchasing any firearms from juveniles online, and noted that parents of juveniles can be held criminally and civilly responsible for the actions of their children.
He also urged residents to lock their vehicles when they’re not in use, especially if there are firearms or other valuables stored inside.
Anyone with information about the stolen firearms or those involved in the thefts are encouraged to contact the Eddy County sheriff’s office at (701) 947-5515. Anonymous tips can be sent by text to (701) 341-0534.
