He attended Hillsdale Country School and graduated from Sheyenne High School in 1955. Shortly after he began working for Campbell Construction Company, where he worked for 20 years. It was the kind of place, that "(you) started out picking rock and then would kind of work your way up, running the packer, the water truck and then finally, the blade." Irvin married Barbara Haley on Oct. 8, 1960, in New Rockford, N.D. On Oct. 5, 1961, he was drafted into the U.S. Army, Co. A 864th Engineering Bn, at Fort Wolters, Mineral Wells, Texas. In 1976, he was hired by the Eddy County Road Dept., where he was a Road Grader Operator, helping with road maintenance and road building. He then moved on to be the ECRD Supervisor. He and Barb were also members of the New Rockford Eagles, where they also bartended. After 42 years, he retired and continued to be busy taking care of the farmstead east of New Rockford. If you would call him, he was often out on the zero-turn mower, or in his workshop, but always needed to be busy.
