Black Sox defeat Polar Bears in season opener

The Sheyenne-New Rockford Black Sox got off to a great start this season with an impressive comeback win against the Polar Bears in Larimore on Thursday, April 4.

SNR senior Lucas Yri takes a swing at a perfect pitch. Yri went 1-for 3 in the batters box and also scored two runs for the Black Sox.

The Sox were the first team on the board after a single by Thomas Allmaras, who was later brought home by a 2-out RBI single from Brody Weisenburger in the top of the first inning.

The Polar Bears didn't respond immediately, but they'd soon take a strong lead.

After scoring their first run in the bottom of the third, they followed that up with another run in the fourth and two more runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.

Meanwhile, the Black Sox could only muster two additional runs in the top of the fourth, courtesy of a double from Alex Weisenburger that scored his cousin Brody as well as Lucas Yri.

After six innings the Polar Bears had a 6-3 lead, putting the Black Sox in a situation where they had to score at least three runs in the top of the seventh to continue the game.

The Sox weren't interested in just continuing, however, and would instead string together a series of hits and take their own commanding lead.

Connor Knatterud got the scoring started with a double to center field to score Easton Simon, who'd reached on a hit-by-pitch to start the inning.

That was followed by an RBI groundout from Keaton Cudworth, and then four consecutive singles, all combining to score 6 runs in the inning.

With that outburst of offense, the Black Sox took a 9-6 lead.

The Polar Bears had one last shot in the bottom of the seventh, but Knatterud was on the mound, and he induced three quick outs to seal the Black Sox' victory.

Doing the most at the plate were the Weisenburger cousins. Alex went 2-for-4 with four RBIs, while Brody went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, combining to account for 2/3rds of their team's runs.

Also hitting well was Thomas Allmaras, who went 2-for-3 and crossed home plate twice.

The Sox were supposed to have a game on Tuesday against North Star, but wet fields in both New Rockford and Cando postponed that matchup.

The Sox were scheduled to play again on Thursday, April 11 against Kidder County in Steele.
