Jacobson, Smith take first at Viking Early Bird Special

The New Rockford-Sheyenne junior high track and field team kicked off their outdoor season in Kindred on Tuesday, April 9 for the Viking Early Bird Special.

NR-S seventh graders Isla Jacobson and Gabe Smith both brought home first place finishes for the Rockets.

Jacobson competed in the girls’ 800-meter run and the 1,600-meter run. She finished in first place for both events, with a personal best time of 2:53.23 in the 800-meter and another personal best time of 6:28.19 in the 1,600-meter.

With Jacobson’s two first place finishes, the girls’ team finished in fifth with 20 points.

Smith on the other hand was the only junior high athlete to compete in the boys’ 3,200-meter run. Smith took first place with a time of 14:10.64. Smith also competed in the 1,600-meter run and placed in second with a personal best time of 5:57.45.

NR-S eighth grader Koy Zieman earned himself two second place finishes in Kindred, one in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.71 seconds and another in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.20 seconds.

The boys’ 4x100-meter relay team – made up by Sawyer Huso, Zach Langstaff, Braylon Alfstad and Zieman – took third place overall with a time of 54.96 seconds.

Also placing in the top 10 for the Rockets was Seth Greiner.

Greiner competed in the 1,600-meter run alongside Smith, as well as the 800-meter run. Greiner took fourth in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 6:50.58 and fifth in the 800-meter run with a time of 3:08.94.

Huso competed alongside Zieman in the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash, where he placed 13th in the 100-meter with a time of 13.85 seconds and 12th in the 200-meter with a time of 29.03 seconds. Alfstad also competed in the boys’ 200-meter dash and placed 16th overall with a time of 29.96 seconds.

The boys’ team finished in third place with a total of 49 points.
