Stung like a bee

Cardinals drop season opener to H/WC

The sun came out Tuesday, April 9, and the Carrington and Harvey/Wells County (H/WC) girls' softball teams met at the field at the Fessenden City Park for the teams' first action of the spring.

This is the first year that Carrington and New Rockford-Sheyenne are co-oping for softball.

The Hornets kept the pressure on all game long against the Cards, making them deal with their aggressive baserunning, pin-point pitching and timely hitting for a 16-5 win.

H/WC scored in every inning, plating three runs in the first, four in the second, five in the third, and four in the fourth to take the victory by 10-run mercy rule.

Carrington had three hits in the loss, with Maara Kutz's double one of the highlights. Calleigh Hewitt and Lauren Hendrickson had the other hits for the Cards.

Kutz started in the circle for CHS, pitching 2 1/3 innings and giving up 10 runs before giving way to Kaydence VanRay in the third.

H/WC got a big afternoon from freshman Britain Kittelson. She went 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles, drove in five runs, and scored three times.

Ebony Heilman had two hits in two at-bats, and crossed the plate four times. She was the Hornets' starter from the rubber, and recorded all nine of her outs in three innings via strikeout to get the win.

Also with two hits in H/WC's ledger was Rebecca Copenhaver, one of those being a double. Abby Loen, Ava Kara and Bristol Fike had the other hits for the Hornets.

Carrington (0-1) jumped right into Region 2 play this past Thursday, playing host to the Thompson Tommies at City Park beginning at 4 p.m.

Next Thursday, April 18 the Cards travel to Rolla to play Northern Lights, and come back home Friday for a matchup with Nelson Co./Midkota at 4:30 p.m. All three matchups are regional games.

On Saturday, April 20, the Cardinal JV team will play in the Wilton Jamboree.

Coach Brady Smith returns for his second season at the helm of the Cards, and is assisted this year by Shelby Botha.

H/WC (1-0), part of Region 4, played Velva/Drake-Anamoose last Thursday in Fessenden, and Heart River (Belfield/South Heart) on Friday.

This Tuesday, the Hornets entertain South Prairie-Max, and Wilton-Wing on Friday. All games are regional games.

Justin Lematta is the Hornets' head coach, and he is assisted by Summer Stendsgard and Steph Ellis.
