NR-S approves bids for new bus barn, roof

At a special meeting of the New Rockford-Sheyenne School Board, bids were accepted to build a new bus barn to house the district’s buses, and to build a new roof over the school’s elementary wing.

The potential of building a bus barn has long been considered by the school board and the district’s building committee, and now it’s officially becoming a reality.

During a special meeting on Wednesday, April 17, the board accepted a construction bid submitted by TL Construction of New Rockford totaling $149,800 to construct the building, as well as an $88,899.99 bid for the necessary materials from Cash and Carry Lumber.

Combined, that comes out to a total of $238,699.99 to construct the bus barn, which will be located on the empty lot just south of the school, on the corner of Central Avenue and 5th Street South.

The two bids they accepted were the only bids the district received for the bus barn project.

Committee members had previously determined a smaller structure with just two garage doors would be cost effective and practical for the district, and could easily be added on to at a later date.

The structure will have 72-by-60 foot dimensions with “D-Rib steel” for its exterior walls and roof, as well as two insulated overhead doors approximately 28-by-14 feet in size.

Board members believe having a bus storage facility will ultimately save the district money in the long run, giving their buses a place to stay out of the elements, which should cut down on maintenance costs and improve their vehicles’ longevity.

Also at the special meeting on Monday, the board accepted bids for a roof replacement of the school’s elementary wing.

They accepted an $18,475.85 bid for materials from Cash & Carry Lumber, and an $22,260 construction bid from Dean Wallace Construction LLC, for a total cost of $40,735.85.

The project will involve removing old shingles and installing steel roofing, as well as the necessary trims such as a gutter apron and snow guards.

Not accepted was a bid of $103,309 from A & R Roofing out of West Fargo for both materials and labor.
