Sox split

Black Sox win three, fall to Cardinals at home

Despite a close defeat to Carrington on Monday, April 15, the Sheyenne-New Rockford Black Sox have gotten off to a hot start this season.

Going into Monday's game, the Sox had won four straight to start their season and were looking to keep their good fortunes going.

Unfortunately for them, however, the Cardinals had other ideas.

After more than an hour's rain delay, the Cards did most of their damage in the first inning, as several defensive errors allowed a pair of unearned runs to cross home plate.

The Sox cleaned things up on defense as the game went on, as the Cardinals only scored one more run in the fifth inning, but enough damage had already been done.

The Sox' offense was never able to get going, despite several opportunities with runners in scoring position.

Their only run came in the bottom of the fifth inning when Thomas Allmaras crossed home plate thanks to a productive ground out from Brody Weisenburger.

Their lack of offense meant the Black Sox would go on to lose by a score of 3-1, despite excellent pitching from Connor Knatterud.

Nevertheless, the Sox have still had an excellent run to start this season.

They had won their opener against Larimore on Thursday, April 4, and followed that up with a close 3-2 win against Kidder County on Thursday, April 11.

That game saw Keaton Cudworth pitch seven solid innings, while Brody Weisenburger knocked in two runs on 2-of-3 hitting.

Knatterud also notched the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth inning, with a double into left field scoring Easton Simon.

The Sox' next wins came in shortened games in Washburn on Saturday, April 13.

In just 2.5 innings against the Surrey Mustangs, the Black Sox exploded on offense for a dominant 12-2 victory.

Then, in five innings against the Washburn Cardinals, the Sox won yet another close game – this time by a score of 4-3.

As that game was tied at 2-2 entering the fifth inning, the go-ahead run was scored by Brody Weisenburger, whose line drive double into left field scored Keaton Cudworth.

Bradyn Collier then scored a much-needed insurance run with a single that sent Weisenburger across home plate.

With those victories and the loss to Carrington, SNR was 4-1 on the season ahead of an important matchup against the LaMoure/Litchville-Marion Loboes at home on Tuesday, April 23.

The Black Sox' next game is scheduled for Friday, April 26 against the South Border Mustangs in the opening game of the two-day SNR Jamboree.
