Deng, Leftbear and relays qualify for state at Lloyd Memorial
The New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets are back on the track after a week off due to the recent rainy weather.
The Rockets competed at the Clark and Sharon Lloyd Memorial Invitational in Fessenden on Tuesday, April 23 and were quite successful.
Fort Totten seniors Deng Deng and Dalen Leftbear earned their shot at the North Dakota State Track and Field Meet at the end of May.
Deng Deng competed in the boys' high jump and long jump events, as well as the boys' 4x200-meter relay and the 200-meter dash. Deng secured two state qualifications with a first place finish in long jump with a jump of 21-5 1/2 and a first place finish in high jump with a jump of 6-2. Deng also earned a fourth place finish in the boys' 200-meter dash with a time of 24.20 seconds.
Leftbear competed alongside Deng in long jump, high jump and the 4x200-meter relay. Leftbear also ran in the boys' 4x100-meter relay. Leftbear earned his first state qualification in the boys' high jump, as he jumped a personal best of 6-2. In the long jump, he took ninth place overall with a jump of 17-10 1/2.
The boys' 4x200-meter relay – which consisted of Micah Dutch, Marial Deng, Leftbear and D. Deng – finished in third place with a time of 1:38.86. Finishing in first was the Harvey/Wells County relay team, made up of Carson Heilman, Kayl Sieg, Keaton Keller and Tallen Thorson, with a state-qualifying time of 1:33.53.
Leftbear ran the second leg of the 4x100-meter relay alongside Richard Cavanaugh, Bennett Meier and Dutch. The relay team placed in third overall with a time of 48.16 seconds. The Rockets had two other 4x100-meter relay teams compete. Jackson Schumacher, Malaki Kukowski, Bucky St. Pierre and Koy Zieman came in fourth place with a time of 48.50 seconds. The third team – made up of Kolton O'Connor, Danny Garcia, Aiden Riggle and Sawyer Huso finished in sixth with a time of 52.76 seconds.
M. Deng, R. Cavanaugh, St. Pierre and B. Meier made up the Rockets' 4x400-meter relay team that placed in third behind the Benson County team with a time of 4:02.16.
Dutch was another key factor for the boys' team. He took second place in the boys' 100-meter dash with a personal best time of 11.78 seconds, just 34 milliseconds off from state-qualifying. Dutch also took third place in the boys' 200-meter dash with a time of 24.14 seconds.
Other top 10 placings for the Rockets came from Bennett Meier, DJ Mudgett, Marial Deng, Easton Benz, Kage Walford, Jackson Schumacher, Kylon Keja, Francis Bellile, Gabe Smith, Seth Greiner and Koy Zieman.
B. Meier competed in the boys' high jump and long jump events, where he placed third with a jump of 5-10 in high jump and tied for ninth in long jump with Leftbear with a jump of 17-10 1/2. Also competing in high jump was M. Deng, where he placed fourth overall with a jump of 5-8.
Mudgett, Keja and Bellile all competed alongside each other in the boys' shot put event. Mudgett finished in fourth with a throw of 37-6; Keja finished in sixth with a throw of 36-10 and Bellile rounded out the top 10 with a throw of 34-5. Mudgett also earned fourth place in the boys' discus with a throw of 109-10.
Zieman made his mark in the boys' 200-meter dash and the 100-meter dash, where he took ninth and 10th, respectively.
The Rockets' long distance runners – Gabe Smith and Seth Greiner – competed alongside one another in the 1,600-meter run, where they placed sixth and seventh, respectively. Greiner rounded out the top 10 in the boys' 800-meter run with a time of 2:52.90. Smith however took fifth place in the boys' 3,200-meter run with a time of 13:31.49.
Kage Walford and Jackson Schumacher were top placers in the boys' javelin event. Walford took sixth place with a throw of 131-7 and Schumacher took 10th with a throw of 101-7. Schumacher also competed in the boys' 400-meter run where he took ninth with a time of 59.67 seconds.
And lastly for the boys, Easton Benz earned a third place finish in the boys' triple jump event with a jump of 39 feet flat.
The Rockets boys finished in third place with a total of 106 points behind Benson County and Harvey/Wells County.
As well as the Rockets great finishes, boys' athletes from Benson County and Harvey/Wells County were just as successful.
Carter Engebretson from Benson County snagged a state-qualifying throw of 46-10 in the boys' shot put to earn first place. Cole Knudson, also of Benson County, threw a personal best of 127 feet, 8 1/2 inches in the boys' discus to take first place overall. Other first place finishes for Benson County came from Grant Engebretson in pole vault, Logan Maddock in the 400-meter run and Holdyn Jacobson in the 1,600-meter and the 3,200-meter runs.
For the Hornets, Tallen Thorson blazed his opponents in the 110-meter hurdles with a state-qualifying time of 15.05 seconds. Noah Ziegler also earned a state qualification in the boys' triple jump event with a jump of 42 feet, 2 inches. And lastly, H/WC senior Keaton Keller threw a state qualifying personal best – and a new school record – of 169 feet, 10 inches in the boys' javelin.
On the girls' side of things, the Rockets relays were the top dogs.
Lucy Meier, Katie Allmaras, Jaida Schumacher and Emmie Belquist earned first place in both the girls' 4x100-meter relay and the 4x200-meter relay. As well as the first place finishes, both relays qualified for state, with a times of 52.57 seconds in the 4x100 and 1:51.00 in the 4x200. The Rockets' second 4x100-meter relay team – made up of Ava Peterson, Lora Wobbema, Kaci Weisenburger and Paige Knatterud – finished in fourth place overall with a time of 56.03 seconds.
The Rockets' 4x400-meter relay team – made up of Paige Knatterud, Lucy Meier, Kaci Weisenburger and Ava Peterson – took fifth place overall with a time of 5:50.58.
Peterson and Belquist were the two individual first place finishers for the Rockets girls. Peterson took first place in the girls' javelin with a throw of 111 feet, 8 inches and Belquist took first in long jump with a jump of 15 feet, 10 inches. Belquist also competed in the girls' 300-meter hurdles and finished in third place with a time of 50.08.
NR-S senior Katie Allmaras also competed in the 300-meter hurdles and finished in fifth with a time of 52.24 seconds. Allmaras also secured a fourth place finish in the girls' 200-meter dash with a time of 28.57 seconds.
Jaida Schumacher competed alongside Belquist in the girls' long jump and finished in second with a jump of 15 feet flat. Schumacher also earned a fifth place finish in the girls' 400-meter run with a time of 1:05.83.
NR-S senior Lora Wobbema was successful in the girls' discus and shot put events, where she placed seventh with a throw of 77-3 and 10th with a throw of 25-10, respectively. Logan Cudworth also excelled for the Rockets in javelin, earning eighth place overall with a personal best throw of 72 feet, 5 inches.
Other top 10 placings came from Ava Peterson, Paige Knatterud, Kaci Weisenburger, Isla Jacobson and Lucy Meier.
Peterson and Knatterud competed alongside one another in the girls' 200-meter dash and placed sixth and 10th, respectively.
Weisenburger competed in the girls' 400-meter run and took eighth place overall. Isla Jacobson, the Rocket girls' lone distance runner, took third place in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 6:01.00.
NR-S senior Lucy Meier rounds out the top 10 placers for the Rockets girls' with an eighth place finish in the 100-meter hurdles.
The girls' team finished in fifth place with a total of 85 points.
Just like the boys, the Benson County and Harvey/Wells County girls also did some damage at the Lloyd Memorial.
Aubrey Kenner of Benson County took the cake in the 300-meter hurdles with a state-qualifying time of 48.62 seconds. Kale Williams took first place in pole vault with a vault of 7 feet, 6 inches. Keyara Lundstrom also earned a first place finish for the Wildcats in the girls 3,200-meter run with a time of 13:44.24.
H/WC junior Christalea Wagner ran a state-qualifying time of 26.71 seconds in the girls' 200-meter dash and placed second overall.
The Rockets, Hornets and Wildcats were set to compete at the Mariya Tate Memorial in Rugby on Thursday, April 25.
