Card problems

Sox lose two in a row to Langdon, Carrington

The Cardinals haven't been kind to the Black Sox this season.

After a hot start to the year, the Black Sox have cooled off with their two most recent matchups against two separate Cardinals' teams.

SNR junior Brody Weisenburger stretches out to catch the ball at first base to tag out Langdon Area/Edmore/Munich senior Cole Welsh.

In a matchup at home against the Langdon/Edmore/Munich (LA/E/M) Cardinals on Thursday, April 25, the Sox suffered their first lopsided defeat of the season.

After a scoreless first inning, the Cardinals broke out for a 3-run second inning, and followed that up with a disastrous 8-run inning in the third.

Meanwhile, LA/E/M's pitcher, Tyson Gemmill, was keeping the Sox from doing anything on offense.

Gemmill would ultimately allow just two hits and one walk in four innings, while striking out six batters.

When the bottom of the fifth inning passed with no runs scored by SNR, a 10-run mercy rule kicked in and the game ended at 11-0 in favor of the Cardinals.

Next up for SNR was the other Cardinals team, from Carrington.

SNR second baseman Thomas Allmaras attempts to scoop up a grounder sent out between second base and shortstop during the Region III game against the Carrington Cardinals on Tuesday, April 30.

The Carrington Cardinals had previously been the Black Sox' only loss until they played LA/E/M, and Carrington again had the upper hand when they played each other a second time on Tuesday, April 30.

Pitching for the Cards was Josh Bickett, who also had a strong showing against the SNR lineup.

In seven innings of work Bickett allowed just three runs and six hits, more than good enough when the Cards' offense was as strong as it was.

The only player with multiple hits for the Black Sox was Bradyn Collier, who went 2-of-3 with a run scored.

Easton Simon, Brody Weisenburger and Skye Kramlich accounted for one each of the Sox' three RBIs.

After going scoreless for the first two innings, the Cardinals scored at least one run in each of the next four frames, ultimately combining for seven runs on eight hits.

The result was another tough loss for the Black Sox, bringing their overall record to 5-3 on the season.

Nevertheless, SNR is still undefeated against teams not called the Cardinals, and they'll be hoping to get back to their winning ways with a game against the South Border Mustangs on Monday, May 6 in Ashley, N.D. This game will be covered in the May 13 edition of the New Rockford Transcript.
