Walford earns his first state qualification in javelin

For the first time this track and field season, NR-S junior Kage Walford has earned his shot at the Class B State Track and Field Meet in Bismarck on May 23-25.

Walford joined track for the first time this year and has had a great season so far. In just four meets, his personal best has improved and now he will get to compete against the best in the state come the end of the month.

Walford threw a personal best of 155 feet, 10 inches in the boys' javelin at the Midstate Quad in Rugby on Wednesday, May 1. Walford took third place behind other state qualifiers Keaton Keller from Harvey/Wells County and Ryder Bickett from Carrington.

First place finishes for the Rockets boys came from DJ Mudgett, Bennett Meier and the 4x100-meter relay.

Despite the windy conditions, Mudgett was able to bring home a first place finish in the boys' discus event. He threw the discus a total of 122 feet, 10 inches. Mudgett also competed in the boys' shot put event and placed in third with a throw of 40 feet, 1 1/2 inches.

Without his teammates Deng Deng and Dalen Leftbear giving him competition in high jump, NR-S junior Bennett Meier earned a first place finish with a jump of 5 feet, 10 inches.

The boys' 4x100-meter relay team – made up of Micah Dutch, Porter Granger, B. Meier and Connor Knatterud – took first place with a state-qualifying time of 45.39 seconds. The Rockets boys' B relay team – made up of Kolton O'Connor, Danny Garcia, Malaki Kukowski and Thomas Allmaras – placed fifth overall with a time of 51.51 seconds.

The Rockets' other relay team came from the 4x200, which was made up of Thomas Allmaras, Kukowski, Koy Zieman and Dutch, that came in at second place with a time of 1:42.09.

Top five placings came from Connor Knatterud, Micah Dutch, Porter Granger and Dustin Nystrom.

Knatterud and Dutch competed alongside one another in the 100-meter dash, where Knatterud placed third with a time of 11.57 seconds and Dutch placed in fifth with a time of 11.75 seconds.

Granger secured two top five finishes, with fourth place in both the 200-meter dash and boys' long jump. Nystrom took fifth place overall in the boys' 1,600-meter run with a time of 6:25.42

The boys' team came in fifth place overall with a total of 81 points.

NR-S freshman Ava Peterson was the only individual Rockets' girl to earn a first place finish in Rugby on Wednesday, May 1. Peterson competed in the girls' javelin and threw it a total of 113 feet, 2 inches.

The girls' 4x100-meter relay team – made up of Lucy Meier, Katie Allmaras, Jaida Schumacher and Emmie Belquist – placed first with a state-qualifying time of 52.31 seconds.

The Rockets also had a girls' 4x200-meter relay team and a 4x800-meter relay team. Peterson, Suri Gourd, Logan Cudworth and Isla Jacobson ran the 4x800-meter relay and placed third with a time of 12:12.04. The 4x200-meter relay team, which was made up of Kaci Weisenburger, Karsyn Wetzel, Paige Knatterud and Peterson, placed fourth overall with a time of 2:00.12.

Other top five placings came from Emmie Belquist, Jaida Schumacher, Katie Allmaras and Lucy Meier.

Belquist competed in the girls' 100-meter dash, the 100-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles. She placed second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.43 seconds; fourth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 18.64 seconds and fourth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 50.40 seconds.

Katie Allmaras brought home both a fourth place finish and a fifth place finish from the 100-meter dash and the 300-meter hurdles, respectively.

Schumacher and L. Meier competed alongside one another in the 100-meter dash, where Schumacher finished in third place and Meier finished in fifth place. Schumacher also competed in the 400-meter run and placed second overall with a personal best time of 1:03.17.

The girls' team finished in fourth with a total of 88 points.

The Rockets will head to Fessenden on Tuesday, May 7 to compete in the annual CNDC meet starting with field events at 2 p.m.
