Black Sox go back and forth with Mustangs
The Sheyenne-New Rockford Black Sox took on the South Border Mustangs on Monday, May 6 for a double-header, and each walked away with a win.
Game 1 got started just after 2:30 p.m. at the Jim Johnson Memorial Field in New Rockford, and it was a close affair early on.
Both teams scored exactly one run in the first inning, with the Sox' run coming on an RBI double from Brody Weisenburger which scored Keaton Cudworth, who had just hit a stand-up triple to right field.
The second inning was scoreless, but then each team scored another run in the third inning as neither team was able to break out for a strong lead.
Unlike the Sox, however, the Mustangs never found their groove offensively.
With Connor Knatterud pitching well for SNR, and with several stellar defensive plays by his teammates, South Border simply wasn't able to capitalize on several opportunities.
Meanwhile, when the Black Sox found themselves with the bases loaded and zero outs in the fifth inning, they got exactly what they needed.
The Sox ultimately sent five runners across home plate in the frame, thanks to an error and RBI singles from both Easton Simon and Knatterud.
Now with a commanding lead, the Sox comfortably closed out the game while giving up just one additional run in the sixth inning, giving SNR a 7-3 victory.
When the second game of the day began soon after, it appeared the Sox would be taking another victory.
After three innings in Game 2, the Black Sox found themselves with a 5-3 lead.
However, the Mustangs added a couple more in the fourth inning to tie the game at 5-5.
The Sox responded with another run in the sixth inning courtesy of a Brody Weisenburger single that scored Thomas Allmaras, and had a 1-run lead entering the bottom of the seventh inning.
Unfortunately for the Sox, that slim advantage was soon erased by an RBI single lined to center field, scoring a run and once again tying the game.
That wasn't the end of South Border's comeback, however, as yet another RBI single was hit to center field a few batters later, scoring a seventh run and giving the Mustangs a walk-off 7-6 win to end the day.
Prior to the double header on Monday, the Sox had played two games in Rugby on Saturday, May 4.
The Sox won their first game of the day by a score of 10-0 over Rugby, but lost their next game against Velva/Drake/Anamoose by a score of 3-2.
With two more wins and two more losses, the Sox' regular season record was brought to 7-5, and their Region 3 record to 3-3.
The Sox had a couple more games last week which occurred after press time, and then next on their schedule is the final regular season game against Harvey/Wells County on Monday, May 13 at 4:30 p.m.
A baseball play-in game is scheduled for Thursday, May 16, which is followed by the Region III tournament taking place in Steele beginning May 20.
