Meier tops all at Carrington Kiwanis/Lions Meet

On Saturday, May 4, the New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets attended the Carrington Kiwanis/Lions Meet.

Topping all at the meet for the Rockets was NR-S junior Bennett Meier.

Meier competed in the boys' high jump and the 400-meter run. In high jump, Meier took first place with a personal best jump of 6 feet flat. In the 400-meter run, Meier placed eighth with a time of 58.13 seconds.

Also placing high for the Rockets was NR-S senior DJ Mudgett. He competed in both the boys' shot put and discus events, taking fourth place in both.

NR-S freshman Malaki Kukowski earned a sixth place finish in the boys' long jump event with a distance of 16 feet, 8 inches.

Other top 10 placings came from NR-S seventh graders Seth Greiner and Gabe Smith. Greiner competed in the boys' 800-meter run and finished in eighth place with a time of 3:04.93. Smith on the other hand ran in the 3,200-meter run and placed 10th overall with a personal best time of 12:53.12.

The Rockets boys' team finished in ninth place with a total of 25 points.

Carrington, Harvey/Wells County, Griggs-Midkota and Benson County also had great placings at the meet.

For the Cardinal boys, Jaxon Schaefer brought home two first place finishes – one from pole vault, with a vault of 10 feet flat and one from the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.04 seconds.

The Cardinals' 4x200-meter and the 4x400-meter relay teams – made up of Peyton Harrington, Ryder Bickett, Paxton Harrington and McKade Zink – also earned first place finishes.

Carson Heilman and Keaton Keller led the Hornets team with top placings. Heilman competed in the 400-meter dash and the 300-meter hurdles, earning first place in both events. Keller placed first in the boys' javelin event with a throw of 148 feet, 2 inches.

For the Titans, Levi Kautzman and Davis Bengson earned blue ribbons with their first place finishes. Kautzman topped all in the boys' shot put with a state-qualifying throw of 49 feet, 7 inches. Bengson on the other hand, placed first in the boys' 800-meter run with a personal best time of 2:17.52.

Four male athletes from the Benson County Wildcats brought home first place finishes – those being seniors Logan Fossen, Cole Knudson and Macyn Olson, and junior Colton Green. Fossen earned first place in the boys' long jump with a jump of 19 feet, 3 inches, whereas Green took the cake in the boys' triple jump with a distance of 36 feet, 9 inches. In boys' discus, Knudson threw 130 feet, 4 inches to take first place. And lastly, Olson earned his first place finish in the boys' 200-meter dash with a time of 24.23 seconds.

On the girls' side of things, Kaci Weisenburger and Isla Jacobson were the lone top 10 placers for the Rockets.

Weisenburger competed in the girls 100-meter dash and finished in 10th place with a time of 15.12 seconds. Weisenburger and Jacobson both competed in the girls 400-meter run, where Weisenburger placed in eighth place with a time of 1:10.60 and Jacobson earned 10th place with a personal best time of 1:13.21. Jacobson also competed in the girls' 800-meter run and finished in seventh place with a time of 2:50.56.

The Rockets girls' team placed in 10th with a total of three points.

Just like the boys' teams, the Cardinals, Hornets, Titans and Wildcats also scored high in the girls' division.

Madison Johnson was the lone individual placer for the Cardinals, earning first place in the girls' 3,200-meter run with a personal best time of 11:30.05. Johnson also ran as the anchor in the girls' 4x200-meter relay team that placed first, alongside Harper Kollman, Kenadie Pazdernik and Mercedes Lura.

The Hornets girls' only first place finish came from the girls' 4x100-meter relay team. Christalea Wagner, Aubrey Thorson, Maci Reutter and Addisyn Faul made up the team and placed first with a time of 53.41 seconds.

Just like the Hornets, the Titans earned their first place finish also in a relay. The girls' 4x800-meter relay team – made up of Kadence Spickler, Ellie Hoffman, Eryn Turner and Tianna McCardle – finished in first place with a time of 10:42.00.

Benson County sophomore Ella Fossen topped all in the girls' long jump with a jump of 15 feet flat.

The Rockets are set to compete at the Panther Booster at Johnsen Field in Rugby on Monday, May 13. Field events start at 2 p.m. with running events to follow at 3:45 p.m.
