Rockets, Hornets compete at 99th annual Howard Wood Dakota Relays

The New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets and the Harvey/Wells County Hornets competed at the 99th annual Howard Wood Dakota Relays in Sioux Falls, S.D. on Friday, May 3 and Saturday, May 4.

H/WC junior, Tallen Thorson, ran a personal best time in the boys' 300-meter hurdles with a time of 40.20 seconds. Thorson came in at third place behind Trey Knoke of Fargo North, who placed second, and Jeran McNichols of Bismarck, who took first with a time of 39.36 seconds. Thorson was also set to compete in the boys' 110-meter hurdles, but was disqualified due to hitting a competitor's hurdle in the prelims.

On the Rockets' side of things, a total of nine athletes competed – those being Connor Knatterud, Deng Deng, Katie Allmaras, Lucy Meier, Porter Granger, Ava Peterson, Micah Dutch, Emmie Belquist and Jaida Schumacher.

Micah Dutch, Porter Granger, Deng Deng and Connor Knatterud made up both the 4x100-meter and the 4x200-meter relay teams. The 4x100-meter relay team finished in sixth place with a time of 45.04 seconds. In the 4x200-meter relay, however, the Rockets placed in ninth with a time of 1:33.81.

Along with competing in the relays, senior Deng Deng competed in the boys' long jump and high jump events. Deng placed 10th overall in long jump with a distance of 21 feet, 1 3/4 inches and 21st in high jump with a jump of 6 feet flat.

NR-S senior Connor Knatterud also ran in the boys' 100-meter dash and placed 43rd overall with a time of 11.61 seconds.

The girls' 4x100-meter and 4x200-meter relay teams – made up of Lucy Meier, Katie Allmaras, Jaida Schumacher and Emmie Belquist – were top placers for the Rockets as well. In the 4x100-meter relay, the girls finished in 12th place with a time of 52.30 seconds. The team placed 16th in the girls' 4x200-meter relay with a time of 1:50.92.

NR-S eighth grader, Jaida Schumacher, competed in the girls' 400-meter dash and placed 59th overall with a time of 1:04.50.

Ava Peterson earned 20th place in the girls' javelin event with a throw of 105 feet, 9 inches and Emmie Belquist placed 43rd in the girls' 300-meter hurdles with a time of 49.55 seconds.
