Deng Deng breaks CNDC, NR-S school record
Dang! This kid is on a roll!
Which kid you may ask? We're talking about Fort Totten senior, Deng Deng.
At the Central North Dakota Conference (CNDC) Outdoor meet in Fessenden on Thursday, May 9, Deng Deng had a phenomenal day – with breaking a CNDC meet record and a New Rockford-Sheyenne school record. Yes, you read that right – both a school and a CNDC record.
Deng Deng competed in the boys' high jump, long jump and the 100-meter dash. Deng cleared 6 feet, 7 inches in high jump, earning first place and setting a new CNDC meet record in that event. Charlie Bisbee of Leeds set the record back in 1984, also with a jump of 6 feet, 7 inches. With the jump of 6 feet, 7 inches by Deng Deng, he broke the NR-S school record, which was set back in 2004 by Alex Belquist with a jump of 6 feet, 5 inches.
Deng Deng earned a first place finish in the boys' 100-meter dash with a time of 11.55 seconds and in the long jump, he placed fifth overall with a distance of 20 feet, 5 inches.
DJ Mudgett competed in the boys' discus event, throwing for a total of 130 feet, 4 inches. He also competed in the boys' shot put event and earned third place with a throw of 41 feet, 8 inches.
Dalen Leftbear competed alongside Deng Deng in the boys' high jump and placed second with a personal best jump of 6 feet, 5 inches.
Lastly, Granger earned his second place finish in the boys' 100-meter dash with a time of 11.62 second. He also competed in the boys' 200-meter dash and the boys' long jump events, where he placed in fifth and fourth, respectively.
The boys' 4x800-meter relay team – made up of Dayson Dubois, Aiden Riggle, Danny Garcia and Lander Guy – finished in third place with a time of 11:01.07.
NR-S junior Kage Walford competed in the boys' javelin event and placed in third with a state-qualifying distance of 146 feet, 7 inches.
In the high jump event, Bennett Meier jumped his all-time best at 6 feet, 3 inches to qualify for state and finish in third place overall.
Other top five placings for the Rockets came from Easton Benz and Gabe Smith. Benz competed in the boys' 100-meter dash and finished in fourth place with a time of 11.81 seconds. Smith, on the other hand, competed in the boys' 800-meter run and 3,200-meter run and finished in fourth and fifth, respectively.
The boys' team finished in third place with a total of 102 points.
NR-S sophomore Ava Peterson and freshman Emmie Belquist were the top dogs for the Rockets girls' team.
Peterson officially punched her ticket to state in the girls' javelin event with a qualifying – and personal best – throw of 123 feet, 11 inches to finish in first place.
Belquist, on the other hand, hit the state-qualifying mark on the dot – 16 feet, 5 inches – in the girls' long jump to earn a first place finish. Belquist competed in the girls' 100-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles, finishing in first place in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.21 seconds and fourth place in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 49.14 seconds. Lastly, she competed in the girls' 200-meter dash and finished in third place with a time of 28.05 seconds.
The Rockets' relay teams finished in the top five as well. Lucy Meier, Kaci Weisenburger, Ava Peterson and Paige Knatterud made up the 4x100-meter relay team and placed fourth overall with a time of 54.16 seconds. The girls' 4x200-meter relay team – made up of Kaci Weisenburger, Haven Cavanaugh, Karsyn Wetzel and Paige Knatterud – finished in fifth with a time of 2:04.10.
Other top five placers for the girls' team were Lucy Meier and Jaida Schumacher. Both Meier and Schumacher competed in the girls' 100-meter dash, with Meier finishing in fourth place with a time of 13.46 seconds and Schumacher placing in fifth with a time of 13.53 seconds.
