Sox defeat Loboes, Hornets; fall to Wolves at home

The Sheyenne-New Rockford Black Sox will enter the Region III tournament with momentum, having won two games in a row against the Loboes of LaMoure-Litchville/Marion and the Harvey/Wells County Hornets.
First to fall were the Loboes, who hosted the Sox on Saturday, May 11 in LaMoure.
On the mound for SNR was Keaton Cudworth, and for six innings on Saturday he and the defense behind him kept the Loboes from scoring a single run.
Meanwhile, the Sox offense was steadily building a healthy advantage.
Two runs came in the top of the first inning, courtesy of an RBI single from Luke Yri that scored Cudworth and Thomas Allmaras. Another run was tacked on in the third after Allmaras launched a triple into center field, and later crossed home plate on an RBI groundout from Cudworth.
Their final runs were scored in the fifth inning when an RBI double from Alex Weisenburger scored Cudworth and Yri.
As it turned out, the Sox would need every single one of their five runs scored through the first six innings, as the Loboes made a furious comeback attempt in the bottom of the seventh.
An RBI single, two RBI doubles and an RBI fly-out allowed four Loboes' runners to cross home plate, but Cudworth managed one final strikeout to end the inning and the game, with a final score of 5-4.
Up next for the Sox was their final game of the regular season against the Hornets in Harvey on Monday, May 13.
Mound duties for the 5-inning game were split between Thomas Allmaras and Luke Yri, and between them they completely shut out the Hornets lineup.
The Sox' offense wasn't fairing much better, however, as they too failed to score for several innings. But unlike the Hornets, the Sox eventually caught a few breaks.
An RBI double from Allmaras punished a walk issued to Easton Simon early in the fifth inning, which was followed by three more walks and a costly error, sending three more runners across home plate and giving the Sox a 4-run lead.
The Hornets weren't able to respond in the final frame, and the Black Sox took the win.
Unfortunately for SNR, their triumph against the Loboes and Hornets was preceded by a loss to Kidder County at home on Thursday, May 9, after a late-inning comeback by the Wolves earned them a 7-6 victory.
The Sox end their regular season with a 9-6 overall record, and finish third place in the Region III standings – much better than their regular-season record of 3-10 at the end of last year's spring season.
The Region III tournament begins on Monday, May 20 in Steele, N.D., beginning with a 10 a.m. matchup between the Black Sox and the Kidder County Wolves at 10 a.m.
