Five Rocket athletes, boys 4x100 relay team named region champs
The New Rockford-Sheyenne track and field team competed at the North Central Region meet in Rugby on Friday, May 17.
The Rockets boys' team did exceptionally well, coming up only four points shy of a regional championship.
Four Rocket boys were deemed champions in their events – Connor Knatterud, Deng Deng, DJ Mudgett and Kage Walford.
Knatterud earned region championships in both the boys' 100-meter and 200-meter dashes.He ran the 100-meter dash in 11.10 seconds and the 200-meter dash in 22.86 seconds.
Deng Deng took first place in the boys' high jump event with a jump of 6 feet, 6 inches. Deng also beat the meet record that was set back in 2016 by Nolan Hovland of Rugby with a jump of 6 feet, 6 inches.
DJ Mudgett earned his first place finish in the boys' discus event with a throw of 125 feet, 6 inches. Kage Walford took first place in the boys' javelin event with a throw of 164 feet, 10 inches.
The Rockets 4x100-meter relay team – made up of Micah Dutch, Bennett Meier, Thomas Allmaras and Connor Knatterud – also earned a region championship with a time of 45.58 seconds.
The Rockets had many other top three finishes, which means a trip to the state track and field meet on May 23-25.
Connor Knatterud, Bennett Meier, Koy Zieman and Porter Granger made up the boys' 4x400-meter relay team that placed in second with a time of 3:40.06.
Also earning top three placings for the Rockets were Porter Granger, Deng Deng and Marial Deng.
Porter Granger competed in the boys' long jump, 200-meter dash and the 100-meter dash. He earned third place in long jump with a distance of 20 feet, 11 ¾ inches and third place in the boys 200-meter dash with a time of 24.30 seconds. In the 100-meter dash, Granger state-qualified by time – 11.44 seconds – and finished fifth overall in the event.
Deng Deng took second place in the boys' 100-meter dash with a time of 11.36 seconds and second in long jump with a distance of 21 feet, 1/4 inches. Deng's younger brother, Marial, earned third place in the boys' high jump event with a jump of 5 feet, 10 inches.
The Rocket boys' team placed in second overall with a total of 148 points.
On the girls' side of things, Emmie Belquist was the only Rocket girl to bring home an individual region championship. Belquist competed in the girls' 100–meter hurdles and finished in first with a time of 16.88 seconds.
Belquist also ran as the anchor of the girls' 4x100-meter relay team with Lucy Meier, Ava Peterson and Jaida Schumacher. The 4x100-meter relay finished in second with a time of 51.65 seconds.
The Rockets girls' team placed in sixth overall with a total of 39 points.
Prior to the North Central Region meet, the athletes had previously qualified for state by time, distance or height in the following events:
