Around the County: Drought conditions in Eddy County

Eddy County spent most of the winter at moderate drought to abnormally dry. Just when I was starting to think farmers would start field work early, it started to rain. Now only the northwestern border of Eddy County and the northeastern border of Wells County are still abnormally dry.

I started taking and uploading field and pasture pictures on April 15, which is the start of the Condition Monitoring Observer Report period for the 2024 season. Feel free to send field or pasture pictures for me to upload to [email protected].

I started reporting rainfall in Sheyenne and New Rockford as part of the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow network (CoCoRahs) on April 15. From April 15 to May 15, we have been gifted with enough rain to mostly refill the soil profile to a depth of 40 inches at the Carrington NDAWN station. Total precipitation for the period of April 15 to May 14 for the surrounding area was 3.90 inches in New Rockford; 4.02 inches in Sheyenne; 3.74 inches eight miles north of McHenry; and 3.83 inches four miles north of Carrington. Between April 15 and April 21, it rained most days, making planting somewhat difficult.

Total precipitation for the last week was 0.77 inches in New Rockford; 0.48 inches in Sheyenne; 0.62 inches eight miles north of McHenry; and 0.63 inches four miles north of Carrington. The maximum 24-hour rainfall was 0.64 inches, 0.43 inches, 0.38 inches and 0.38 inches, respectively. CoCoRahs rain data can be found at CoCoRahs.org.
