Sheyenne: June 3, 2024

Every Monday if it isn't raining, volunteers meet at the Community Garden at 6:30 p.m. The past week, Michelle Gilley, Stan Kruger and Patti Larson planted a couple more rows of tomato plants that Stan raised in his greenhouse. This week, sweet corn and cucumbers will go in. Michelle, NDSU Extension Agent, plans to use the back half of the garden for youth to get involved with growing vegetables. Area children are encouraged to come and "learn in the dirt" at 6 p.m. Monday, June 3.

Two new apple trees were planted in the Prairie Dawn Orchard next to the Community Garden. Frostbite and Sweet Sixteen are the varieties. The winter was hard on some of the fruit trees. Several more will need to be replaced.

Patti Larson stopped at the Krugers on Thursday to pick up cones to cover the tomato plants in the Community Garden. We are reminded that the threat of frost lingers in North Dakota through May. She also went home with fresh lettuce from Stan's greenhouse.

Thursday morning, Patti Clifton kept a medical appointment in Carrington. She also made a few shopping stops in Carrington and New Rockford before returning home.

Wednesday afternoon, Jan Loe visited with Jim and Marjean Woodrow and Pam Hill in Grand Forks. On Thursday, Jan and her daughter Steph were in Fargo.

Sandra Larson and Judy LaBonne drove home from Minneapolis on Friday for Memorial Day weekend. Judy then joined Peter on a birthday trip to the Minot Air Museum on Saturday. They also visited their cousin Carol at her family business, Lowe's Garden Center.

The $250 blackout went out Saturday on the 60th number called by Dianne Hanson at Sheyenne Bingo at Ostby Hall. Bob Hanson and Patti Larson sold cards and Darlene Kolstad served lunch. June 1, the Sheyenne Fire Dept. hosts bingo and blackout will be $175.

On Sunday at 2 p.m., the New Rockford-Sheyenne High School graduation ceremony took place on the stage at the NR-S school gym. Patti Larson attended the open house receptions for Kate Allmaras on their farm west of New Rockford and for Trysta Thumb at the New Rockford golf club.

Ostby Hall was filled with area residents for the annual Memorial Day program on Monday. The program opened with the Advance of Colors by members of Eddy Co. VFW and Taps by Sandra Larson, with the Pledge of Allegiance by all. Pastor Jeff gave the opening prayer, Memorial Day litany, Memorial Day address and the Benediction. Musical selections included patriotic music by the Community Band; soloist Jeff Labrensz; the audience; soloist John Olson; and a men's group made up of Zach Smith, Jared Hartl, Joe Greiner and Neal Swenson. Readings were given by Camden Rieger and Jan Loe. The Retiring of Colors by the VFW concluded the program. Master of Ceremonies for the program was John Olson and pianist was Bonnie Deegan. A delicious ham and baked potato dinner followed the solemn program and people lingered to visit.

Patti Clifton received a call from Ted Robinette on Monday. They had a good visit discussing many subjects on current events. Ted called to tell Patti that his daughter, a clinical pharmicist, also lives in Sun Prairie, Wisc., and works at the VA Hospital in Madison. It's a small world!
