Batter up!

Summer ball back in swing for Post 30, Babe Ruth

Only days after the Sheyenne-New Rockford Black Sox took on the Class B baseball state tournament, most of the team were back on the diamond for the Legion baseball season.

And the Post 30 Black Sox picked up where they left off, getting an impressive comeback win over the Kidder County Wolves on Thursday, June 6 in Steele.

The Wolves jumped out to an early lead in the first inning thanks to an RBI double and a sacrifice fly.

Keaton Cudworth was the starting pitcher for Post 30, but his first inning of work would also be his last, as Easton Simon took over on the mound to start the second inning.

With Simon now pitching the Sox managed to stem the bleeding quickly, and in the innings that followed the Sox were able to get through the Wolves' lineup more efficiently, allowing them to pick away at their opponent's early lead.

The Sox' offense got started with a run in the top of the third after a ground ball from Cudworth allowed Simon to cross home plate, and they soon tied the game in the fourth inning when Simon lined an RBI single into center field to score Bradyn Collier.

An inning later they took their first lead with an RBI single from Brody Weisenburger that scored Connor Knatterud, and just like that the Sox were back in control.

The Wolves didn't make it that easy, however, and they responded with another pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to retake a slim 1-point lead.

How did the Sox respond with one last chance to complete their comeback in the seventh inning? They lashed out for three more runs to retake their lead.

A double from Brody Weisenburger and RBI singles from both Knatterud and Thomas Allmaras brought three runners across home plate, which turned out to be more than enough to secure the victory.

It was a great start to the summer baseball season for Post 30, and they followed it up by splitting a double-header with the Garrison Titans on Tuesday, June 12, losing the 7-inning game 3-4 and winning the 5-inning game 3-2.

In their victory against Garrison, Cudworth bounced back from his one inning in Steele with an excellent five innings of work, striking out 10 batters and allowing just two runs.

The Black Sox then earned a thrilling victory over the Devils Lake B Storm on Wednesday June 12.

Yri was the Sox' starting pitcher for the game and did well to keep the Storm from scoring in 6.1 innings of work. Meanwhile the offense put up two runs in the bottom of the third, and maintained that lead into the top of the seventh.

Just three more outs were needed to secure the victory, but a sudden spell of defensive errors loaded the bases with Devils Lake runners. And they capitalized soon after, scoring on a walk issued by Connor Knatterud – who'd come on in relief of Yri – and an RBI bunt.

The Sox weren't quite able to respond in the bottom frame, and turned to Brody Weisenburger to pitch in extra innings. Weisenburger isn't often on the mound for Post 30, but on this occasion he efficiently worked through three batters for three quick outs.

His catcher, Bradyn Collier, rewarded his efforts with an RBI double into left field in the bottom of the eighth, sending Luke Yri across home plate for the walk-off victory. Collier is becoming quite the reliable hitter in the clutch, having delivered several clutch RBIs in recent games.

The Sox, boasting an impressive 3-1 overall record, played once again Thursday, June 13 against the Carrington Cardinals, and are slated to play on Monday, June 17 in Devils Lake.

Meanwhile, the Black Sox' Babe Ruth team got their season started with a double header against the Hillsboro/Central Valley Blue Sox on Wednesday, June 12.

The first game saw the Black Sox narrowly fall to the Blue Sox by a score of 8-7, and although they were able to score a few more runs in the second game, the Black Sox lost the H/CV again by just one point, this time with a final score of 11-10.

Babe Ruth will return to the diamond on Monday, June 17 at 11:30 a.m. for a home game against Thompson.
