Sheyenne: July 8, 2024

Last Sunday, Bonnie Deegan and Jan Loe had breakfast at the American Legion in Minnewaukan. Bonnie went back to Sheyenne while Jan stayed in Minnewaukan to spend the afternoon visiting with Brian and Pam Hill at their summer home there.

As the Sheyenne community prepared to host another Independence Day, more scraping, painting, mowing and trimming took place the past week. The last blighted house and a few more scruffy trees came down in Sheyenne, which completed the Rural Workforce Housing Grant expenditures. Dave and Nathan Rue of NCZ Express did a superb job on the backhoe and skid steer. Dave Chenze and Dave Chenze Jr. were on hand to remove the trees located too close to the underground utilities. Frequent rains took care of watering the newly-planted grass and the trees at Hendrickson Park.

Several area residents took in the first of three Summer Street Markets in New Rockford on Thursday, June 27. Sheyenne entrepreneurs Amy Bachmeier, Nicole Chenze, Joanna Larson and the Sheyenne Rodeo Club were among the vendors. Emma Myhre, Madi Myhre and Amanda Hegland organized the event and also had a booth. Jake Hegland provided a petting zoo. Byron Nelson, originally from Oberon, was one of the musical performers.

Gavin Brown got more scraping and priming done on the old Sinclair station on Main Street. It was exciting to see that Otter Tail Power Company and Yri Electric of New Rockford brought the power back on.

Patti Larson met with the Sheyenne Fire Dept. at their June meeting last Thursday evening at 7 p.m. She shared what has been raised so far for the restoration of the stone pit. Donations have been coming in for the rebuild that will begin later in July.

Mark Kreger brought fresh picked sweet corn from a farm in Wisconsin that's available at Route 281 Station. Nice to have the early season treat for family gatherings. The corn at the community garden has a long way to go!

Tuesday, Jan Loe and Steph had lunch with Jim and Marjean Woodrow and Pam Hill in Grand Forks.

Bob and Dianne Hanson, Peter and Patti Larson, Lynn and Charlotte Erickson, and Roger and Diane Langley found themselves around the same table at the Sanctuary Event Center in Fargo on Saturday, June 29. All were there to celebrate with Neil, Laurie and Shirley Westby at Scott and Dara's wedding. Collin Hanson, best man, gave a wonderful toast/speech to the newlyweds at the lovely reception.

Tiffany Harr called bingo for Sheyenne Civic Association on June 29. Blackout did not go out, so it will be $200 on July 6 when the Sheyenne Fire Dept. hosts. Denise Labrensz and Steph Loe sold cards while the New Rockford American Legion Auxiliary served lunch.

Our community reaches out with condolences to the family and friends of Thorman Logan Jr. who passed away Saturday morning in a Grand Forks hospital.

The NDRA Rodeo slack got underway Sunday morning at 9 a.m. on a beautiful day. The afternoon performance was a crowd pleaser and there were food vendors on hand for everyone's convenience. Perfect temperature and a breeze made for another great Sheyenne rodeo.

Sunday, Loe cousins and two aunts from Iowa, Minnesota and North Dakota had a great time catching up with lots of visiting and a great taco bar, hosted by Jan and Steph Loe, at the Sheyenne Senior Center.

Sunday evening, Bob and Dianne Hanson, Dave Karlsbraaten, Ian and Michelle Gilley, and Peter, Patti and Joanna Larson moved picnic tables and chairs and set up for the annual 4th of July dinner. Ostby Hall is ready! Dianne has been picking up groceries and getting potatoes delivered to those who will bake them. We hope to see you at the dinner!
