Sheyenne News: July 15, 2024

Many households in the Sheyenne community welcomed families home for the 4th of July celebration.

Last week started out wet. It rained Monday evening, so the community garden volunteers didn't meet. Any time is a good time to pull weeds in the cucumber, corn or onion rows. The potatoes have been hilled up and are shading out the weeds. Tomatoes are mulched. Stop by anytime and pick cherries that are plentiful in the Prairie Dawn Orchard.

Steve Loe, his daughter Madison and her friend Joe, all of Lincoln, Neb., arrived in Sheyenne on June 30 for a visit with mom Jan and sister Steph. While here, they enjoyed the Sheyenne July 4th parade and pit beef BBQ. Later on the 4th, they gathered at the Sheyenne Senior Center for a visit with Jim and Marjean Woodrow of Grand Forks, Melissa Stenberg of Minneapolis and Jason Stenberg of Brocket. Friday evening, they met Brian and Pam Hill and families in Minnewaukan for supper at Old 281 Tavern, and later sat by the bonfire visiting at the Hill's summer home. Sunday, Jan, Steph and Steve traveled to Brocket to visit at the home of Jason Stenberg. Madison and Joe left for home on July 4. Steve stayed until July 8 before returning home to Lincoln.

Work will begin on the Rural Slum and Blight Removal Grant which encourages collaboration between the Sheyenne GRIT non-profit organization, businesses and city government.

First Lutheran WELCA members Dianne Hanson and Patti Larson met Tuesday morning, July 1, at Ostby Hall to put the final touches on the Fourth of July dinner preparations.

Joanna Larson set up the Prairie Gates Farm Stand next to the Sheyenne Senior Center on Wednesday, July 3, in time for a soft launch for the Fourth of July holiday weekend. It is now open for business on Main Street, Sheyenne. Joanna is currently stocking the produce fridge with early season vegetables and herbs. Soaps from Clean Little Boy Soaps of New Rockford, firewood and local hand-made crafts are featured at the self-serve stand. A grand opening of the stand will coincide with the August 10 Sheyenne Sidewalk Market and city-wide rummage sales.

The Sheyenne Fire Dept. had a beautiful day on July 3 to start the firewood to coal process for the pit beef BBQ. The entire load of wood is burned to charcoal chunks, then covered in sand for the roasts to cook in the pit overnight. Wednesday evening, over a dozen fire dept. crew and their families prepared the beef and onions for the overnight roasting.

Sandra Larson and Jasper Zarkower drove from the Twin Cities to spend the long weekend in Sheyenne.

Independence Day, Thursday, there was a calm breeze, sunshine and 70 degree temps. The streets of Sheyenne were filled with parade watchers. Collin Hanson announced the parade as Charlotte Franks Erickson (filling in for Dean and Chris Warren) and Bob Hanson registered close to 40 parade entries. The Sheyenne Community Band float, organized by Liz Swenson, received $50 for Most Entertaining. Best Decorated prize went to Minnewaukan Girl Scouts. Most Original was Tea Cup (heifer) and Joanna Larson for Eddy County Commissioner. Gavin Brown's vehicle was voted the Best Antique Auto. Eddy Co. 4-H, Brent and Jenna Helseth, was awarded Best Horse. The Norris and Lorraine Ystaas family received the Best Tractor prize.

As nearly 500 people streamed through the dinner line, neighbors greeted each other, visited friends and family from all over and enjoyed their time together over a great meal.

After taking part in the Fourth of July activities in Sheyenne, Jeff and Denise Labrensz, along with Matt and Allison Pfeiffer and family traveled to Mobridge, S.D., on July 5 to spend a couple of days. While there, they visited with Jeff's mom Ramona and Jeff's nephew Josh and his family who had come from Philadelphia, Pa. The six young cousins enjoyed spending time together while the adults visited. They ranged in age from 1 year to 6 years old. Great-grandma Ramona enjoyed watching them as they played!

The Larson farm hosted an Anderson family reunion on Friday evening. Cousins came from Texas, Hawaii, California, Minnesota, Oregon and across North Dakota. The golf cart, four wheeler, farm animals and farm machinery were a hit for the next generation cousins.

The annual church service/potluck was held Sunday, July 7. The wet conditions moved it inside to First Lutheran Church rather than Warsing Dam.

Dianne Hanson called bingo for a big crowd on July 6. Bob Hanson and Dave Rieger sold cards for the Sheyenne Fire Dept. Darlene Kolstad served lunch. Blackout did not go, so it will be $225 on July 13 when Sheyenne Civic Association hosts. New batches of free stuff are put out every week!
