District woes

Post 30 takes district losses, Babe Ruth end on win streak

After taking down Langdon in a thrilling come-from-behind victory, the New Rockford Post 30 Black Sox ran into a few more roadblocks on Tuesday, July 9.

Up first was Carrington Post 25, and their pitcher Kael Kovar carried a shutout into the seventh inning, while their offense rode home runs from Grady Shipman and Josh Bickett to take a crucial District 4 win over New Rockford Post 30 at Carrington's City Park Tuesday, July 9.

The Redbirds got single tallies in the first, third and fifth innings, and tacked on two insurance runs in the sixth to pick up the win.

Kovar's bid to blank Post 30 was thwarted by a Connor Knatterud solo home run for the Black Sox with one out in the seventh – the first homerun of the season for any Post 30 player.

Luke Yri led the Black Sox lineup with a 2-for-2 effort, and Thomas Allmaras and Skye Kramlich had hits in addition to Knatterud's solo shot.

With the exception of two home run balls, Easton Simon pitched well for Post 30.

In his six innings, Simon scattered eight hits, four earned runs, and got three strikeouts. He did not walk a batter, and threw 81 pitches, 62 for strikes.

Meanwhile, Shipman had gotten Post 25 off and running with a solo home run in the first inning, his sixth of the summer.

And in the third, Shipman's drive to right-center field was misplayed for a drop, allowing Jack Erickson to score from second and make it 2-0, Carrington.

Two frames later, Shipman was once again in the middle of a Post 25 rally, cracking a one-out double and scoring on Hudson Schmitz's opposite-field single to right.

Not long after, Bickett would strike gold with his first career home run for Post 25, a two-run shot to bring home both himself and Kovar.

On the hill, Kovar was effectively wild in his complete game effort for the Redbirds, walking five, striking out seven, and giving up five hits while throwing 120 pitches.

Following the game against Carrington, the Sox also took on Kidder County and unfortunately for them were dealt a similarly disappointing loss, with a final score of 1-5.

It was again defensive mistakes that dealt the most damage to Post 30, as four errors allowed three unearned runs to cross home plate.

The losses dropped Post 30 to 4-6 overall and 1-3 in District 4 games.

Up next, the Sox will play another game against Langdon on Monday, July 15 at 5 p.m., this time at their home field in New Rockford, before taking on South Border in Wishek the following day for their last game of the regular season.

The District 4 Tournament will begin on Monday, July 22 in New Rockford.

Meanwhile, the Babe Ruth Black Sox have been on quite the winning streak to conclude their regular season.

After taking down Hatton-Northwood on July 1, the Babe Ruthers won three dominant games in a row, first against Carrington 12-0 on Tuesday, July 2, then against Tolna 17-3 on Monday, July 8, and finally an 18-3 victory over Cooperstown on Wednesday, July 10.

Their winning streak brings their regular season record to an impressive 7-2, with the Babe Ruth District 4 Tournament beginning on Wednesday, July 17 at Mayville. The Black Sox are going into the tournament as the No. 2 seed.
