Post 30 wins three, Babe Ruth at Districts
With only a few games left in the regular season, the New Rockford Post 30 Black Sox have been hard at work gaining momentum before the district tournament.
After a solid start to the season, the Sox began to struggle and lost four of their next five games entering a matchup against Park River Post 147 in Fordville on Thursday, July 11.
They had scored just two runs in those four losses, and entered that matchup desperately needing to get their bats going. Thankfully for Post 30, they did exactly that early on against Park River.
Alex Weisenburger was the first to cross home plate for his team in the first inning, as he singled and later capitalized on an error to score the run.
And then, four games of offensive frustration were unleashed all at once in the second inning.
After several walks were issued to start the inning, Post 30 capitalized with several clutch hits.
First was a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded to score one run, but then came an RBI single from Thomas Allmaras and another by Alex Weisenburger, followed by an RBI double from Keaton Cudworth, scoring two more runners.
It was a 5-run second inning for the Black Sox, bringing the score to 6-0.
Park River Post 147 started to make a comeback in subsequent innings, however, scoring five unanswered in the next three innings. But ultimately Post 30 shut the door in the final inning.
The top of the seventh inning saw four Black Sox hitters take a base on balls as well as two RBI singles from Allmaras and Luke Yri, respectively.
The final score would ultimately be 11-6 in the Sox' favor.
Up next was a District 4 matchup against the Jamestown Post 14 Blues 16U team on Friday, July 12, and the Sox enjoyed an impressive game once again.
Post 30's offense was effective in Jamestown, scoring one run in the second, third and fourth seasons, followed by a dominant 4-run fifth inning.
Meanwhile, the Jamestown offense was doing little to nothing, kept at bay by the pitching duo of Skye Kramlich and Thomas Allmaras.
Kramlich started on the mound, and in five innings allowed six hits but not a single run, while striking out five.
Allmaras then came on in relief and earned another five strikeouts, while allowing just one runner to cross home plate.
The back-to-back victories suddenly had the Sox' regular season record looking much better at 6-6 with a few more games still to go.
The first of those games was canceled due to a wet field, and the second was played against the LAW Rattlers in Wishek on Tuesday, July 16.
That game saw the Black Sox once again show improvement as they wrap up their regular season.
On the mound, Easton Simon pitched seven innings and struck out 10 batters while allowing four runs.
In previous games, Post 30 would have lost after having given up four runs, but with a rejuvenated offense those four runs were hardly enough to keep the Black Sox at bay.
Powered by Alex and Brody Weisenburger at the plate, as well as Luke Yri and Connor Knatterud's ability to draw a walk, the Sox scored 10 runs in the first five innings and held on for a 10-4 victory.
That brings their regular season to an end with a strong 3-game winning streak and with an overall record of 7-6.
Post 30 will now focus on continuing their run of good form at the district tournament hosted in New Rockford on July 22-24.
Meanwhile, the Babe Ruth Black Sox kicked off their district tournament on Wednesday, July 17. They lost their first game against Thompson 2 by a score of 7-9.
However, they rebounded with a dominant 9-1 victory over Hillsboro/Central Valley in the lower bracket.
Final results from the Babe Ruthers' district tournament will be published on the Transcript's website.
