Sheyenne: July 29, 2024

Some of the lush crops and garden plants in the Sheyenne area took a hit last Tuesday afternoon when the brief hailstorm with a strong north wind and heavy rain came through about 4 p.m. The onions and tomatoes at the Hunger Free Community Garden really got beat up. Stan Kruger and Patti Larson had been there weeding the evening before, when the onions, potatoes and tomatoes looked so amazing prior to the hailstorm.

Last Tuesday evening, Dylan Rue began digging out and around the cement fire pit next to Ostby Hall to prep the area for the rebuild of the pit. Dave Chenze, Dave Karlsbraaten and Richard Hoffner from the Sheyenne Fire Department were on site to make some decisions about all that needed to go.

On Wednesday, July 17, Patti Clifton was in Carrington to do some shopping. While there, she met Peg Clifton for a visit and ice cream treat at Hiway Drive-In. She also stopped at Community Credit Union and Miller's Family Foods in New Rockford.

Last Friday, Richard Hoffner and Dave Karlsbraaten met with Bobby Hoffner from Esmond who came to look at the fire pit project. He and his cement crew will be able to tie in to the base that is already in place. Work should resume by the last week of July.

Under Carrington house mover Dave Lutman's directions, more tree and shrub trimming needed to take place on the 301 Pleasant Ave. property owned by Sheyenne GRIT before the house can be moved in. Dave Chenze and Dave Chenze, Jr. completed that request midweek. The pile of dirt from the basement dig will also be hauled out until needed for back fill.

Patti Larson has been contacting Sheyenne area residents and vendors who wish to participate in the Sheyenne Sidewalk Market and City-Wide Rummage Sales on Saturday, August 10, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Darlene Kolstad agreed to make her delicious caramel rolls to be available that Saturday morning at Ostby Hall. Marliss Platz, Doris Griffin, Shirley Myhre and Joanna Larson will have produce, baked goods and jellies in the Farmers Market. Homemade lunch will be available at Ostby Hall and the kids games with prizes will be held at the former school playground. Free stuff will find its way to the curbs around town. Should be a great day to shop in Sheyenne!

Dave Karlsbraaten called bingo for Sheyenne GRIT last Saturday night. Tim Hartl and Randy Keller sold cards. Patti Larson and Diane Karlsbraaten served lunch. Blackout of $250 did not go out, so it will be $275 on July 27 when Sheyenne Civic Association hosts.

Patti Larson's cousin Diane Yri and her daughter Jessica and family met Joanna Larson at Ostby Hall to enjoy bingo lunch and later visited at the Larson home.

Jessica Logan and Donald Abell were married Saturday afternoon, July 20, at First Lutheran Church in Sheyenne. A reception was held at Open Season Lodge after the ceremony. Sheyenne sends best wishes to the newlyweds.

Ian Gilley flew to Laramie, Wyo., on Saturday to attend a two-week energy innovation boot camp. Having recently successfully defended his masters thesis, Ian is excited for the opportunity to network and collaborate with colleagues at the camp held at the University of Wyoming.

Sunday, Peter and Patti Larson drove to Antelope Valley Church and brought back 27 folding chairs for Ostby Hall. Greg and Cindy Hegland had offered the chairs to be used at large events held in Sheyenne after the families of membership of the church voted to disperse the contents of the church.
