Landing short

Legion, Babe Ruth teams fall short in District Tourneys

The New Rockford Post 30 Black Sox hosted this year's District 4 Tournament, but their home field advantage wasn't quite enough to get them to another state tournament.

Beginning on Monday, July 22, the tournament consisted of four teams from which only one would advance to this year's state tournament for Legion baseball.

Post 30 qualified for last year's Legion state tournament, and entering this season many of the players were fresh off a fourth-place state tournament run this spring. On this occasion, however, the local team fell just short of making it 3-for-3.

The Sox got their tournament started with a game against the No. 1 seed Carrington Post 25 Cardinals on Monday evening.

Post 30 has struggled against Carrington this summer, and despite playing a close game against them at this year's district tournament, the Sox again came up short.

Not helping matters was a severe storm sweeping over New Rockford just as the fifth inning got underway with the score tied at 1-1, forcing a postponement to Tuesday.

When the game got restarted, Post 30 took a brief 2-1 lead, but ultimately allowed Carrington to score two of their own runs to take a slim 3-2 advantage, which turned out to be just enough.

The loss meant Post 30 would have to play immediately afterwards against Kidder County, and would have to play yet again that day if they won.

Playing three games in one day amid high temperatures and near 100 percent humidity certainly wouldn't be ideal, but first they had to take care of business against Kidder County, which they did quite efficiently.

Starting on the mound for the Sox was Keaton Cudworth, who put in another masterful performance with seven scoreless innings and eight strikeouts.

His pitching allowed Post 30 to take advantage of several Kidder County mistakes, scoring three unearned runs and one earned run to give them a shutout 4-0 victory.

Then came their third game of the day, this time against the Linton/Ashley/Wishek Rattlers. And unfortunately for the Black Sox, the third time around definitely wasn't the charm.

The Sox lost to the Rattlers by a final score of 3-7, ending their season one game shy of another state tournament.

Also falling just short of another state tournament were the New Rockford Babe Ruth Black Sox.

After a very successful regular season, the local Babe Ruthers entered their district tournament as the No. 2 seed and had hopes of a state tournament appearance, having traveled to Park River this time a year ago for the previous year's state tournament.

However, an early upset in round 1 saw them drop to the lower bracket, and despite a convincing string of victories, they ultimately fell one game short of the championship match.

Despite not quite achieving their ambitions this summer, the Black Sox will have proven to their fans this spring and summer that the future of local baseball is bright, and that they'll be back next year gunning for even better results.
