Sheyenne: August 5, 2024

The tomato plants at the community garden are struggling to come back after the hail storm on July 16. Michelle Gilley and Patti Larson picked off about five gallons of damaged fruit so the plants could focus energy on new blossoms. The setback will be significant before new ripe tomatoes are seen.

A couple of large tree limbs at both Hendrickson Park and Warsing Dam also fell victims to the strong winds of that hailstorm.

Eunice Throlson volunteered at the sign-in table of Vitalant Blood Drive in New Rockford last Monday. Patti Larson was one of several Sheyenne residents who gave blood. There continues to be a strong demand and short supply.

"Dirt work" was the phrase of last week around Sheyenne. A number of skid steers, loader tractors and backhoes were operating at several locations. Dave Chenze and Dave Jr. removed piles by Ostby Hall and also filled in a low spot on the 301 Richter Ave. lot where one house clean-up occurred. Joanna Larson also filled in a low spot on the lot south of the senior center that had settled since the old Corner Cafe was removed years ago. More black dirt will be added as well. Someone filled the huge holes in the alley behind the bar with gravel. Construction footings began north of Warren Implement and the building is up for the future home of the Eddy County Shop. Most notably, the large pile of dirt at 301 Pleasant has been relocated so the house movers will have access to the lot.

Sheyenne extends condolences to the family and friends of Linnea Carlson whose graveside service at Riverside Cemetery was held last Wednesday.

Patti Larson represented Sheyenne GRIT at the Strengthen N.D. Creative Community Solutions gathering at the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center in Washburn last Thursday. It was a chance for fellow grantees to learn from one another. Hearing innovative practices and sharing contacts made it a very worthwhile day. Amanda Hegland from NRABC was on the panel of Bush prize winners.

The artwork painted by Scandinavian folk artist Piper Bloomquist was unveiled. A section of the painting depicts the community spirit of Sheyenne. It will be on tour across the state. Sheyenne will be a stop at a yet-to-be-determined date this winter.

The city-wide rummage sale list has grown to 14. Pick up a list at the Sheyenne Post Office, Route 281 Station or Prairie Gates Farm Stand. The Saturday, August 10, Sidewalk Market also includes vendors and free stuff on curbs. Helpers for the kids games are still needed. Thrivent contributed great prizes for the games. Contact Patti at 701-381-8428 for more info or if you would like to help at the games.

Peter and Patti Larson took in the Fargo Air Show last Saturday. The haze/clouds kept the temperature to a pleasant 82 degrees and a breeze was a bonus. A huge crowd was entertained from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Jan Loe and Bonnie Deegan attended the worship service at Calvary Lutheran Church in Oberon on Sunday morning. Following worship, they enjoyed the American Legion Breakfast in Minnewaukan along with Jim and Marjean Woodrow, Carl Daugherty and Rhoda Stenberg.

Sunday afternoon, Bonnie Deegan enjoyed a visit with Jim and Marjean Woodrow at the Sheyenne Senior Center.

Sheyenne Civic Association hosted bingo on August 3 at Ostby Hall with a $175 blackout.
