The new school year is once again upon us, but for many children a new school year means a new set of challenges. According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, "Many North Dakota households struggle to put food on the table. The most recent data shows: 7.7 percent of households were 'food insecure,' meaning that their access to adequate food is limited by a lack of money and other resources. ... 11.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. ... 10.5 percent of children lived below the poverty line. ... "
For the children who are facing hunger, it can be a challenge to get the energy needed for daily learning and growth. The Hunger Free Food Pantry at First Lutheran Church is doing its part to ensure that hungry children spend less time being hungry and more time being children.
We have had our backpack and second helpings programs for many years now and are able to continue it with the support of the community.
The Second Helpings program covers the cost for New Rockford-Sheyenne school students on the free and reduced meals programs to receive a second helping at no additional charge. Since students are required to pay full price for seconds otherwise, Second Helpings ensures students get plenty to eat during their breakfast and lunch.
In addition, the pantry also served an average of 8 students weekly with a backpack program. At the end of each week, the food pantry delivers a prepacked bag from Great Plains for students to take home over the weekend. This food helps students to supplement their meals over the weekend.
The Hunger Free Food Pantry coordinator, Katie Jorgensen says, "Students are able to focus better, think clearer, and listen more intently if their stomachs are filled with nutritious food."
You can help support the Hunger Free Food Pantry and help to end food insecurity by donating today. Donations for the Second Helpings program can be made in any amount. Backpack program sponsorships are $100 for half the school year or $200 for the full school year.
