Sheyenne: August 26, 2024

The Hunger Free Community Garden has onions, potatoes, cucumbers and tomatoes. Help yourself. Please pull a few weeds as you pick.

Mother Nature's ample rain has made the Hendrickson Park tree planting project a joy this year. Only a few times all summer did the 20 new trees get watered. The park looked especially nice to welcome many campers for the Sheyenne Stampede weekend.

Peter, Patti and Joanna Larson, Ian and Jon Gilley and Marge Anderson took in the Lifesavers in the Park supper. Many Sheyenne residents attended the event and are so grateful to our local volunteers who are first responders and/or serve on the ambulance squad.

Several family members celebrated Stan Kruger on his birthday Sunday, including his sister Shirley Westby. Patti Larson stopped by in the evening with an ice cream cake. Dawn Kruger, who teaches Art in Little Fork, Minn. (a five-plus hour drive from Sheyenne), said she was surprised one day when her school principal had a Sheyenne Stampede t-shirt on ... turns out she is a barrel racer!

People did show up at Hendrickson Park from miles around! After the fog lifted on Saturday morning, it was a beautiful day for the Sheyenne Stampede events! Eighty-five barrel race contestants entertained the crowd for several hours beginning at 1 p.m. There were several vendors on hand serving everything from breakfast burritos to Dippin' Dots ice cream. Between the barrel races and Ranch Rodeo, a new Miss Sheyenne Stampede was crowned for 2025. Emily Ackerman of Jamestown won, judged on horsemanship, personality in the interview, queen speech, a written exam and appearance.

A large crowd gathered at 5 p.m. for the Ranch Rodeo. Twelve teams competed for bragging rights and great prizes. Sheyenne's Grann and Co. demonstrated impressive ranch skills but was edged out by Bruner Angus Ranch of Drake, N.D., for the top prize.

Lacey Grann won "Top Hand," a prize awarded to a top competitor competing in both barrel racing and ranch rodeo events.

It was great to see so many Sheyenne alum return for the Stampede.

At 8p.m., Jason Cross opened for the Eli Young Band, singing several familiar songs mixed in with originals – he got the crowd started! A great concert ensued.

Dem-NPL candidate for U.S. Senate Katrina Christiansen and her assistant Elizabeth were very impressed at the energy of the community of Sheyenne as they enjoyed taking in the Stampede. Patti and Sandra Larson showed them around town.

Patti Larson attended the bridal shower for Ashley Schuster at the First Lutheran Parish Hall in New Rockford on Saturday morning. Ashley is the bride-to-be of Wilson Howard. They will making their home along the Sheyenne River east of Sheyenne. October 5 is their wedding date.

Joanna Larson and Ian Gilley hosted friends Emily and Nathan Parry of Fargo at their new residence for the Stampede festivities.

Last Wednesday, Patti Clifton and Jan Loe enjoyed coffee and visiting in New Rockford.

Patti Clifton did a few errands last Thursday in Carrington.

Nearly three inches of rain midweek had Sheyenne residents busy mowing once again. We appreciate Dave Rieger as he generously mows several unkept properties around town.

Rance, Jena and Rowan Brown of Sun Prairie, Wisc., arrived in Sheyenne on Thursday, Aug. 15. They came to spend several days at the home of Jena's mom Patti Clifton and brother Jared. It was a busy time with Rance and Jena doing some odd jobs around the house, as well as lots of visiting and keeping up with 2 1/2-year-old Rowan who is quite the busy little fella! Rance was out at Warsing Dam a couple of evenings to enjoy some fishing and, of course, did most of the cooking while here (what a treat!). The Browns left Sheyenne on Tuesday, headed for Stanton to spend several days with Rance's family and to catch up with friends in the surrounding areas before heading back to Wisconsin early next week.

Jena Brown and son Rowan, along with Patti Clifton, visited at the Hegland Ranch on Saturday morning, Aug. 17. They visited with Greg and Cindy Hegland, as well as Ty and Kirsten Hegland and Ella from Fargo who were all home for the weekend.
