Guler, Smith top all at Medina XC Meet

The New Rockford-Sheyenne cross country team loaded up and traveled north to compete at the 8th Annual Devils Lake Grahams Island Invitational.

The Rockets had a total of seven runners compete at this meet, with three placing in the top five.

NR-S eighth grader Gabe Smith came in second in the junior varsity boys' division behind Isaac Kraft of Devils Lake with a time of 11:39.14.

Seth Greiner, Theodore Hall and August Meier also competed in the boys’ junior varsity division.

Greiner took 25th place with a time of 13:57.20; Hall finished in 32nd with a personal best time of 15:11.34 with Meier following behind in 33rd with a time of 15:41.21.

On the girls' side of things, Liza Steele and Elise Guler were top placers.

Steele earned second place with a time of 13:38.11 behind Carrington seventh grader Kahri Kollman, who took first place with a time of 13:13.80.

Guler, on the other hand, finished in fifth place overall with a time of 14:01.59, also behind Carrington runner Grace Inglish who finished in fourth with a time of 13:48.52.

NR-S seventh grader Makaya Heskin took 44th place overall in the girls’ junior varsity division with a time of 25:58.82.

Grahams Island also offered a race for elementary students. In total, NR-S had 10 runners compete: Amelia Smith, Teddy Smith, Clara Smith, Levi Greiner, Luke Greiner, Leah Steele, Lucy Steele, Libby Steele, Casey Ystaas and Bryce Yri.

Top placers for the elementary runners were Casey Ystaas in fifth place and Leah Steele in seventh place.

On Monday, Sept. 9, the cross country runners were back to running, this time at Crystal Springs Bible Camp for the Medina Cross Country Meet.

The Rockets had two runners bring home first place finishes in the junior high division: Gabe Smith with a time of 13:04.70 and Elise Guler with a time of 14:42.40.

Along with Guler and Smith, the Rockets had three other top 10 placers.

In the junior high girls’ division, Liza Steele earned second place with a time of 15:07.40 whereas Makaya Heskin finished in ninth with a time of 22:59.80.

Seth Greiner competed in the junior high boys’ division and took seventh place overall with a time of 14:58.60.

Also competing for the Rockets in the junior high boys’ division were Theodore Hall, August Meier, Casey Ystaas, Bryce Yri and Jacob Cleveland. Hall finished in 12th with a time of 16:02.00 and Meier took 16th with a time of 17:02.40. Ystaas, Yri and Cleveland competed for the first time this season, earning 22nd, 23rd and 25th place, respectively.

Just like the Grahams Island Invitational, the Medina XC Meet also included a race for the elementary runners. Running for the Rockets in this race were Manny Meier, Libby Steele, Lucy Steele, Logan Cleveland, Wyatt Cleveland, Levi Greiner, Luke Greiner, Amelia Smith, Teddy Smith and Clara Smith.

Manny Meier was the only top 10 placer for the Rockets, finishing in seventh place overall.

On Monday, Sept. 16, the NR-S Cross Country team will travel to Wildwood Country Club near Burlington to compete in the Des Lacs Burlington Lakers Invitational starting at 4 p.m. Results from this meet will be included in the September 23 edition of the New Rockford Transcript.
