Four qualify for state at Harvey Hope Invitational

The New Rockford-Sheyenne cross country team was back in action on Monday, Sept. 23 at the Harvey Hope Invitational in Langdon.

Unlike previous meets, the Rockets entered five total runners into the varsity boys’ and girls’ divisions with hopes of qualifying for the state meet at Parkhurst Rec Area outside of Jamestown on October 25.

To qualify for state, runners in the varsity boys’ division had to run a time under 25:00 minutes and runners in the varsity girls’ division had to run a time under 27:00 minutes.

Of the five NR-S runners to compete at the varsity level, four have officially punched their ticket to the state meet in October.

Gabe Smith and Seth Greiner will be representing the Rockets in the boys’ division, whereas Liza Steele and Elise Guler will be representing in the girls’ division.

At the Harvey Hope Invitational, Smith finished 17th overall with a time of 19:49.3 and Greiner finished in 25th place with a time of 23:05.2.

Liza Steele fell just short of the top 10, finishing in 12th place with a time of 23:12.0 with Guler following behind in 24th with a time of 26:01.9.

NR-S freshman Katie Cleveland came up just shy of state qualifying, as she finished in 25th place behind Guler with a time of 27:36.6.

The Rockets also had three junior varsity boys compete in Langdon – August Meier, Theodore Hall and Jacob Cleveland.

Meier was the top finisher for the junior varsity boys, finishing in third place overall with a time of 14:06.1. Hall followed closely behind, finishing in fourth place with a time of 14:24.6. Cleveland rounded out the top 10 with a time of 16:02.1.

The Harvey Hope Invitational also included an elementary race. The Rockets had a total of 10 runners participate – Casey Ystaas, Levi Greiner, Luke Greiner, Bryce Yri, Leah Steele, Lucy Steele, Libby Steele, Logan Cleveland, Wyatt Cleveland and Manny Meier.

On Monday, Sept. 30, the Rockets will compete in their home meet at the New Rockford Golf Course. The meet will start off with the middle school 3k at 4 p.m. with a rolling schedule to follow with the junior varsity 3k, elementary 1-mile fun run, varsity girls 5k and the varsity boys 5k.

Any kids in grades K-6 are welcome to join in on the elementary fun run! No registration required!

Concessions will be available at the meet. Come on out and cheer on the Rocket runners!
