Around the County: Oct. 7, 2024

Eddy County Extension hosted our first Progressive Ag Safety Community Event at the 4-H Pavilion on Friday, Sept. 20 during the Steam Threshers Reunion.

We had five stations where youth could learn about safety when around ATVs/UTVs, grain, lawn equipment, PTOs and farm equipment and one station where youth learned about some of the negative effects of opioid use.

Safety demonstrations were provided by local volunteers and nearby Extension Agents using equipment and materials provided by the New Rockford Fire Department, Albert Pfeiffer and the Eddy County Agricultural Improvement Association.

It was great to see 196 youth and 32 teachers/chaperones rotate through the stations.

Also, thank you to all the visitors who came to eat at the 4-H Roast Beef Fundraiser Dinner during the Steam Threshers Reunion.

Items wanted for food drive

National 4-H Week is October 6-12. Eddy County 4-H is organizing our second annual food drive with donations going to the food bank at the First Lutheran Church of New Rockford. Eddy County 4-Hers will be dropping off door tags soon and picking up bagged food items the afternoon of Sunday, Oct. 13. If your door does not get tagged, feel free to drop off canned goods, boxed foods and other non-perishable items at Miller’s or the NDSU Extension – Eddy County Office at 205 3rd St SE from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Holiday specific items include stuffing mix, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie filling and canned sweet potatoes or yams. Last year over 900 pounds of food were collected and donated.

I believe that 4-H is an excellent program for youth and volunteers to learn new skills and make a positive difference in their community now and in the future! For more information about joining a club, please call the Eddy County Extension Office at 701-947-2454.
