At their regular meeting on Monday, Oct. 13, the New Rockford-Sheyenne School Board filled the vacancy left by Mike Jacobson's resignation.
Jacobson submitted his letter of resignation in early August, and board members chose to appoint a replacement rather than hold a special election to fill the vacancy.
They adjourned their previous meeting believing that Mary Kay Price, who had served on the school board as recently as this summer, might accept the appointment.
However, Board President Todd Allmaras began Monday's discussion by saying Price had declined the offer, and that another individual who'd shown some interest wasn't from the correct district.
Jacobson was elected to represent the former New Rockford school district, so the board was looking for another resident who could represent the same district.
Allmaras eventually told his fellow board members that Lisa Longnecker – who previously served on the reorganization board in 2005, and then for the first nine years of the newly created New Rockford-Sheyenne district – said she would accept an appointment to fill the vacancy.
With that, a motion was soon unanimously carried to appoint Longnecker to the New Rockford-Sheyenne School Board.
She will serve out the remainder of Jacobson's term, which expires in June of next year. At that time, the seat will be up for election and Longnecker or anyone else from the former New Rockford district will be able to run for it.
In other business at Monday's board meeting, members reviewed but made no changes to a number of policies related to students in foster care, as well as migrant and homeless students.
Before adjourning, board members also carried a motion to accept a quit claim deed to sell approximately one acre of land in Grant Township to Kent and Alyson Myhre, for the price of just $1.
New Rockford-Sheyenne Business Manager Dave Skogen said the Myhre's have also decided to donate $1,500 to the school district, though the donation is not part of the land transaction.
The schedule for the next regular board meeting has been changed slightly to the morning of Tuesday, Nov. 12 via Zoom. An exact time has not yet been scheduled.
