Sheyenne resident opening new mobile coffee business
A delightful caffeine boost is coming to the Sheyenne community, as local entrepreneur Jocelyn Acheson will soon be opening Buckin Brews LLC – her western-themed mobile coffee business.
She's hoping to be open this November and begin offering several delicious caffeinated brews out of her converted 1997 horse trailer.
The western theme of her business is inspired by Acheson's own lifestyle, dating back to her origins in western Montana and throughout her time traveling and moving around with her parents, who now own a farm between Sheyenne and Fort Totten.
Acheson – who's been living in Sheyenne for three years now – has spent countless hours training horses and competing in rodeos, and said she's beginning to become more interested in entrepreneurship now that her body can't handle being bucked off many more horses.
In recent years she's gained managing experience with several businesses, including as a floor manager at Grand Treasure Casino near Trenton, N.D., and as a project supervisor for Transystems, where she also earned her CDL.
Meanwhile, Acheson also finished college and graduated with an Associate of Arts degree from Cank- deska Cikana Community College. She even started her own social media marketing business, and is now excited to be opening another new chapter in her career as a businesswoman.
"It's something I didn't think I was ever going to do," said Acheson about becoming an entrepreneur.
"I always thought I'd stick more with horses, but at a young age I was given the opportunity to become a manager and learn the business side of things, and I had great mentors that took me under their wing."
As for how she came up with the idea for a mobile coffee business, Acheson said she simply found something hers and other nearby communities lack – a place to purchase some decent coffee.
"I decided I like coffee, that there's a need for it from the business standpoint in Sheyenne and our local communities, and I saw a need for something mobile," she said. "And what better way to combine the western lifestyle with coffee than to do it in a horse trailer and take it to events and take it to people."
Acheson, an enrolled member of the Turtle Mountain Tribe, said she'll be taking her business with her as she competes in mounted shooting, which entails rifle, pistol and shotgun shooting from horseback.
Her competitions span from Bismarck to Grand Forks and as far north as the Turtle Mountain Reservation.
"They're always asking for vendors at those competitions," said Acheson. "So I thought, if I'm going I might as well bring the trailer too."
Acheson's converted horse trailer includes four sinks, a counter, a sliding window, an espresso machine, an A/C and heater unit, and of course all the necessary plumbing and electrical to operate a coffee business.
Helping her will be Acheson's family, including her little sister Josette – who already helped by designing the Buckin Brews logo – as well as her mother Julie and her other sister Natasha, who's agreed to be a barista.
She said on Tuesday, Oct. 23 that she's waiting for one more inspection before she can officially open, and that she'll be meeting with the Sheyenne City Council in the first week of November about getting a spot to set up in town a few times a week.
If all goes according to plan, residents of and visitors to Sheyenne will soon have a place to stop for coffee in town.
"I'm excited to meet people in my community," she said. "I moved here a few years ago but I really haven't had an opportunity to meet everyone and to really put down roots in Sheyenne.
"I think this is going to be my forever home," she added. "It's where my family's farm is and I like to stay close to my family. So I'm looking forward to making new connections here."

Acheson said she'll also be available for catering services once she opens, and she can be contacted via phone at (701) 570-8688, or via email at [email protected].
