On Wednesday, Oct. 2, Patti Clifton had noon lunch and a visit with Peg Clifton in Carrington. Later, Patti did a few errands before returning home.

Eddy County Public Health had a steady stream of area residents for the vaccination clinic at the Sheyenne Senior Center Thursday morning, Oct. 3. We greatly appreciate Danette and Lisa doing this each year in Sheyenne!

Jason Stenberg, Brocket, was out and about on his motorcycle on Sunday, Oct. 6. He stopped in Sheyenne for a visit with Jan and Steph Loe.

First Lutheran Church, Sheyenne, will host its annual Fall Dinner and Bake Sale on Sunday, Oct. 27, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Ostby Hall. The always-delicious turkey and all-the-trimmings meal, as well as the baked goods for sale, are always crowd-pleasers! This year's freewill benefit will go toward building improvement at First Lutheran Church.

Strong winds didn't stop the outdoor wedding ceremony of Wilson Howard and Ashley Schuster on Saturday, Oct. 5. A somewhat protected spot in the pasture near the Sheyenne River was where the ceremony took place. The supper and dance followed at the Potter Pavilion, Eddy County Fairgrounds, New Rockford. The Sheyenne community extends best wishes for the young couple who will make their home east of Sheyenne.

Picking up sticks after the windy weekend, Oct. 5-6, was a common occurrence across Sheyenne as residents planned to mow one more time. The week had summer-like temperatures for "winterizing" activities. Beehives were collected from the fields and loaded onto trucks. Campers and sprayers were drained and filled with antifreeze. It was a long fall to not have frost until mid-October. Many soybean fields were harvested and some corn was combined during the week.

The $300 blackout went to a lucky bingo player on Oct. 12. Dave Karlsbraaten called, Devin Melany and Dave Chenze Jr. worked the evening for the Sheyenne Fire Department. Diane Karlsbraaten and Becky Ames served lunch.

Grace Lutheran Church hosted a delicious potluck following worship on Sunday, Oct. 13, as it was National Pastor Appreciation Day. Jeff Halvorson has been serving SOAM for going on seven years. Representatives were there from Grace Lutheran, First Lutheran and Grandfield Lutheran churches to thank Jeff for his work.

Shelley and Kent Rigsby of Jamestown picked up Marge Anderson at the Heritage House in New Rockford and drove up to visit the Larson farm. They were greeted by Joanna's new puppy.

Pam Schmid and Patti Larson enjoyed the production of "Deer Camp" at the Old Church Theater in New Rockford on Thursday evening. Laughter was contagious!

Patti Larson attended the open house honoring New Rockford Mayor Stu Richter at the New Rockford Eagles Club on Wednesday evening.

The crown went to Bailey Jacobson of Sheyenne at the New Rockford-Sheyenne Homecoming queen coronation on Monday of Homecoming week. Congratulations, Bailey!

Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 9, Patti Clifton picked up Jan Loe and they drove to Devils Lake to do some shopping. The next day, Jan and Patti had noon lunch in Carrington and did some errands in Carrington and New Rockford.

Friday afternoon, Bonnie Deegan met Marcie Grohs for coffee and visiting in Devils Lake. On Saturday, Bonnie was invited to the Grohs home near Lawton. Bonnie enjoyed lunch and supper with Marcie and her husband Al, along with an afternoon of visiting and playing music. It was a great time!

Jan Loe and daughter Steph were in Grand Forks on Saturday where they had lunch at Olive Garden with Jan's brother Jim and Marjean Woodrow. Then Jan, Steph, Jim and MarJean went to visit Brian and Pam Hill before doing a little shopping and returning home.

Kathy Ell donated two sewing boxes of thread and other notions to the Community Quilters. The group met on Wednesday last week to organize some materials for quilt tops to be sewn at home. Randy Keller, LaRhae Dodds, Bonnie Deegan and Karen Birkeland were joined by Jan Loe and Patti Larson. They also selected seven quilts to be sent to hurricane victims in North Carolina on the truck First Lutheran Church in New Rockford was loading with all kinds of supplies. Patti delivered the quilts to the church that afternoon. The quilters will meet again on Wednesday, Nov. 6, 1 p.m., at Grace Lutheran Church. Come join the group!

Peter, Patti and Joanna Larson and Ian Gilley recently attended the retirement open house for Jay Hendrickson at the Crossroads Golf Course in Carrington. Jay had worked for Ag Country Farm Credit Services since graduating from NDSU in the '80s.

On Monday, Oct. 7, Patti Larson and Joanna stayed with Sandra in Plymouth, Minn. The next morning, they drove up to North Branch, Minn. to pick up Joanna's new puppy, Valley, from breeder Nick Cummings at Snake River Springer Spaniels.

The new Eddy County shop in Sheyenne now has steel siding. It is white with a dark gray roof. Grandfield Lutheran Church is also getting the final touches of white steel trimmed in gray.

Oct. 10 and 11, Joanna participated in a high tunnel short course in Fargo. The free course, hosted jointly by NDSU and SDSU Extension, included a day of seminars on growing horticulture and floriculture crops under high tunnels. The second day included a tour of several production high tunnels at "Uncle Jesse's Produce" in Lidgerwood, as well as a tour of the high tunnel at Concordia College. Other locals in attendance were NRCS District Conservationist Joshua Bruggman and Eddy County Agriculture and Natural Resources Extension Agent Michelle Gilley. The NRCS offers financial support through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) to help producers put up high tunnels. The typically unheated tunnels are a conservation practice that can extend the growing season 4-6 weeks.

On Saturday, Oct. 12, Ian Gilley and Joanna Larson celebrated the weddings of two of their friends. Ian was a groomsman in high school classmate Isaac Jensen's wedding to Megan Kompelien in Ayr, N.D. Joanna attended the wedding of college classmate Ethan Haley to Emily Knudson in Horace, N.D. After the ceremonies, Ian and Joanna were able to spend a little bit of time at each reception to send off both happy couples!

The fall meeting for the Eddy County Extension Advisory Council met at the office in New Rockford on Tuesday, Oct. 15. Brenda Rue and Patti Larson are the Sheyenne-area members who attended the meeting.

On Wednesday, Oct. 16, Joanna Larson caught up with great-aunt Marlys Hanson over the phone while combining soybeans. Marlys and Merle are getting ready to sell their home in Copperopolis, Calif. They are planning to move closer to daughter Claire.

First Lutheran Church ladies prepared and served the Credit Union Chapter meeting on Thursday evening at the Sheyenne Senior Center. Kathy Albrecht, Diane Karlsbraaten and Dianne Hanson served a delicious meatball supper with salad, homegrown squash and two-tone dessert.

Jon Gilley finished potato harvest and his sister Sharon Rippey and niece Aurora drove from their farm in Deansboro, N.Y., to visit the Gilleys in Sheyenne on Oct 19-21. Cameron Gilley also came to visit for the weekend from Bismarck. It was the Rippeys' first time in Sheyenne! They got a walking tour of the town including Gavin Brown's station, the community garden, Main Street and Warsing Dam. Ian Gilley showed off his pigs, walked his heifer Teacup around and Joanna showed Sharon her gardens. Sharon is a professional flower farmer and florist and shared many pictures of wedding and event work that she did this season. Peter Larson gave combine rides. Sharon remarked over and over that, "It is so beautiful here." The gorgeous fall weather sure helped! The North Dakota night sky put on a great display of the Milky Way and the comet for the visitors, too.

The last Sheyenne Bingo of this year was hosted by Sheyenne GRIT on Saturday, Oct. 26, 7 p.m. at Ostby Hall, Main Street. Blackout was $200 as it did not go out when Dianne Hanson called last Saturday. Randy Keller and Patti Larson sold cards while Laurie Westby and Sharon Whitmer served lunch for Sheyenne GRIT. Bingo will be back the first weekend in March 2025.
