Eight NR-S runners compete at Middle School State XC

The New Rockford-Sheyenne cross country team competed at the first annual North Dakota Middle School State Cross Country Championships on Friday, Oct. 18 at McDowell Dam Recreational Area just east of Bismarck.

A total of eight runners from NR-S competed at the meet.

Casey Ystaas and Bryce Yri – the young'uns of the bunch – competed in the 6th Grade Boys 1,600-meter run. Ystaas finished in 41st overall with a time of 7:35.79, with Yri following close behind finishing in 44th with a time of 7:48.66. Hunter Moldena of Wachter was deemed the champion after finishing the race with a time of 5:16.54.

The Rockets had no entries in the 6th Grade Girls 1,600-meter run. Taking the cake in that race was Hayva Weisbeck of Mandan with a time of 6:05.4.

Next up on the schedule was the 7th/8th Grade Girls 3,000-meter run. Liza Steele and Elise Guler were the proud runners for the Rockets. Steele placed 29th overall with a time of 13:12.66 and Guler finished in 37th with a time of 13:35.52. Taking first place in this race was Hannah Hintz of Wachter with a time of 11:33.18.

The final race of the day was the 7th/8th Grade Boys 3,000-meter run. The Rockets had four runners compete in this division – Gabe Smith, Seth Greiner, August Meier and Theodore Hall. Smith was the top placer out of the boys, finishing in 55th place overall with a time of 11:46.46. Greiner was the next to pass the finish line, taking 116th place with a time of 13:29.76. Meier placed 135th with a time of 14:10.77 with Hall following behind in 144th with a time of 14:59.44. Eighth grader Bracston Kaufman of Horizon took first place with a time of 9:57.14.

On Friday, Oct. 25, the Rockets runners were back in action at the 2024 North Dakota XC State Meet at Parkhurst Recreational Area. Runners competing at this meet were Elise Guler, Liza Steele, Gabe Smith and Seth Greiner. Results from this meet will be included in the November 4 edition of the New Rockford Transcript.
