Several people from the Sheyenne community attended the funeral of Shirley (Larson) Gillig at Evans Funeral Home in New Rockford Tuesday, Oct. 2. Our condolences to Shirley's family and friends.
Pumpkins along Main Street and decorations for Halloween in several yards around town brought a smile to many.
Another pleasant week weather-wise allowed construction projects to buzz along. The basement walls are taking shape at 301 Pleasant Avenue. If all goes well, the house move will happen the second week of November.
The last bingo of this year at Ostby Hall was hosted by Sheyenne GRIT. Steph Loe called, Randy Keller and Patti Larson sold cards. Tara Hanson, Camden Rieger and Ty Zieman served lunch. Bingo will resume March 1, 2025, with a blackout of $225.
Patti Clifton kept an appointment at Hideaway Hair Salon in New Rockford on Tuesday afternoon. She did some errands before returning to Sheyenne, where she stopped for coffee and a visit with those at the Sheyenne Senior Center.
Generosity filled the air over the weekend. Debbie (Reis) Moos and her extended family filled almost 700 shoe boxes with useful items and toys for Operation Christmas Child. The Open Season Lodge has been the perfect space for setting up and filling boxes for several years now.
It was a full house at Ostby Hall on Sunday when First Lutheran WELCA hosted their annual Fall Dinner. A full turkey dinner with homemade desserts and a bake sale with all sorts of goodies were prepared and served by the church women. Stan Kruger donated homegrown squash and Liz Swenson baked her delicious buns for the dinner. (Neither are even First Lutheran members!) Over 300 people, coming from around the area and beyond, enjoyed the meal. Community Credit Union provided cups and napkins, and Thrivent donated $250 toward costs. Proceeds will be used for church building improvements.
A flag pole company with a bucket truck replaced the pulley and cord at the Sheyenne Post Office. You may have seen the specialized truck in town on Friday.
Melinda Padilla Lynch was back in Sheyenne on Sunday. This time she brought a film crew. She is working with the six counties in Region 3 (Benson, Cavalier, Eddy, Ramsey, Rolette and Towner) to promote the "Welcome to the Good Life" campaign for the State of North Dakota. Sheyenne is one of the Communities of Opportunities.
While here, Melinda interviewed a couple of residents, asking why they moved to Sheyenne and what makes them stay. It was a chance to share what people love about Sheyenne. Sunday was a particularly beautiful day, so the drone footage of Warsing Dam and Main Street and the bustling Ostby Hall should be especially inviting. Melinda and crew also filmed in New Rockford and Cando later that day.
Sheyenne GRIT board met October 24 at Ostby Hall. Agenda items included grant updates, ads and application for the free lot at the corner of Richter Avenue and 2nd Street, sale pending for 337 Sheyenne Ave., construction progress on 301 Pleasant Ave. and how to improve use of lots and creamery building across from Ostby Hall. A tentative date of Sunday, Nov. 17, was set for a community GRIT meeting with a taco bar at the Sheyenne Senior Center. The next board meeting will be Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 5 p.m., Ostby Hall.
Carl Daugherty celebrated his birthday on Saturday. It was great to see many of his family together at the fall dinner on Sunday. In his 97 years, this birthday takes the cake for wonderful weather.
Sandra Larson was home from Minneapolis over the weekend, just in time to bake for and help with the First Lutheran Fall Dinner, harvest and grant writing.
