The New Rockford-Sheyenne cross country team competed in the 2024 North Dakota XC State Meet at Parkhurst Recreational Area near Jamestown on Friday, Oct. 25.
The Rockets had four athletes competing – Liza Steele, Elise Guler, Seth Greiner and Gabe Smith.
Steele was the top placer for the Rockets, earning 75th place overall with a huge personal best time of 22:06.7. Steele also placed in the top 10 for the seventh grade girls.
Guler, Greiner and Smith all competed for the Rockets, even though all three were under the weather.
Guler finished in 227th place with a time of 26:37.3 in the girls' division. Smith and Greiner competed in the boys' division and finished in 242nd and 327th place, respectively. Smith ran a time of 21:48.9 and Greiner ran a time of 26:03.4.
Hillsboro/Central Valley seventh grader Claire Grinde was named state champion for the girls' division after taking first place with a time of 18:50.3. The H/CV girls' team were also deemed state champions.
On the boys' side of things, it was Bowman County junior Jonah Njos taking home the crown with a first place finish of 15:39.0. The Bowman County boys' team also donned the name of state champions.
After the completion of the races, the senior athletes of the year were announced as well as coaches of the year.
Kenadie Pazdernik of Carrington was named the 2024 North Dakota High School Coaches Association (NDHSCA) Class B Girls Cross Country Senior Athlete of the Year, whereas Taylor Wanner of Bowman County earned the Class B Boys Senior Athlete of the Year award. Killdeer coach Nathan Horgeshimer was awarded with the 2024 NDHSCA Class B Girls Cross County Coach of the Year and Jon Jahner of Bowman County was presented with the Class B Boys Coach of the Year Award.
