School board hears good and bad news

On Tuesday, Nov. 12, the New Rockford-Sheyenne School Board held a brief regular meeting via Zoom.

Board members received some good and bad news from Business Manager Dave Skogen, who said the district received about $100,000 more in state funding than originally budgeted due to an increase in enrollment at the school.

The district has also received about $15,000 more in state funding for transportation, and Skogen said the increased funding will be a great boost to their projected revenue for the school year.

Then he delivered the bad news: that the arrival of the district’s new activity bus has been delayed yet again.

“We were told it was going to be 30 days from the first of September, when the bus was first received in Bismarck, and now we’re hearing the first of December,” said Skogen. “So the saga continues. The light at the end of the tunnel is there but it just keeps staying at the same distance.”

The school first carried a motion to purchase the activity bus back in October of 2022, at a price of $200,000.

NR-S Superintendent Natalie Becker told board members she learned there was a delay in getting parts, and that installation of a hitch on the bus has been delayed.

Before adjourning, the school board also completed a superintendent evaluation of Becker, the first since she took over the superintendent position on July 1.

The board gave her a satisfactory evaluation on all aspects, which included goal and vision setting; board relations; human resource management; curriculum and student support services; community relations and operations and resource management.

The satisfactory evaluation was approved unanimously by the board.

An exact time for the school board’s next regular meeting isn’t clear, as board members were looking at alternatives to their usual meeting time on the second Monday of the month.

A 7 p.m. meeting on Monday, Dec. 9 would conflict with the middle school and high school Christmas concert.

A final date and time will be published ahead of the meeting.
