Rockets defeat Hornets in quarterfinals, fall to Cardinals in semis
The 2024 Region 4 Volleyball Tournament began on Monday, Nov. 11 at the Devils Lake Sports Center. The No. 4 seeded New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets were set to play the second game of the day against the No. 5 seed, the Harvey/Wells County Hornets.
The first game of the tournament showed the Langdon Area/Munich Cardinals defeating the Dunseith Lady Dragons in three sets (25-4, 25-8, 25-9).
Earlier in the season, the Rockets defeated the Hornets 3-1 easily. And once again, the Rockets brought out a phenomenal performance against them, taking them down in three sets to one.
The Rockets gave up set one 20-25, but came back firing in sets two through four – 25-16, 25-22, 25-19 – to move on to the semifinal matchup on Tuesday, Nov. 12 against the Langdon Area/Munich Cardinals.
NR-S junior Ava Peterson led the Rockets in kills with a total of 23 and Emmie Belquist followed behind with 12. Leading the Hornets was Rachel Neumiller with 10, followed by Braylee Keller with nine.
Scoring in double digits for digs were Belquist with 17, Logan Cudworth with 13 and Kaiya O'Connor with 10. The Hornets had five players in double digits for digs – Keller with 26, Kali Fike with 24, Neumiller and Brooklyn Dockter each with 12 and Christalea Wagner with 10.
Following the Rockets vs. Hornets quarterfinal match the North Prairie Cougars and the North Star Bearcats battled it out for a chance to extend their season.
The Cougars came out of the gates and took down the Bearcats 25-9 in set one, but gave up sets two and three (22-25 and 26-28) to the Bearcats. The Cougars fought back to take set four 25-16 and set five 15-10. With the win, the Cougars were set to move on to the semifinals.
The final game of the day included the No. 3 Benson County Wildcats and the No. 6 Nelson County Chargers. The Wildcats took down the Chargers 3-1 overall (25-9, 25-9, 21-25, 25-13) to move on to play the North Prairie Cougars in the second semifinal match on Tuesday, Nov. 12.
Semifinal night
The Rockets were up first during semifinals night in Devils Lake on Tuesday, Nov. 12 against the No. 1 seeded Langdon Area/Munich Cardinals.
The Rockets put up a good fight, falling 20-25 in set one, 22-25 in set two and 16-25 in set three. This is the first time in three years that the Rockets have fallen to the Cardinals in the Region 4 Tournament.
Once again, Peterson had the most kills for the Rockets with nine. For the Cardinals, it was eighth grader Hilary Haaven leading the team with a total of 17 kills, followed by Aubrey Badding with 13.
Belquist amassed 30 digs for the Rockets, followed by Cudworth with 22 and O'Connor and Peterson each with 18. Digging in double digits for the Cardinals were Payton Hall and Meredith Romfo, each with 15, and Raeleigh Ratzlaff and Badding with 10 apiece.
With this loss to the Cardinals, the Rockets were set to compete in the third and fourth place game on Thursday, Nov. 14 against the losers of the second semifinal matchup – the North Prairie Cougars. The No. 3 seeded Benson County Wildcats would take on the Langdon Area/Munich Cardinals for a chance at a state tournament run. Results from these matches will be published in the November 25 edition of the Transcript.
